Faith: Internal Substance

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Speaking online to the devotees in the USA
5 August 2013

Question: You said earlier that we can hear no sound without ears, we cannot see anything without eyes, and we cannot understand any real spiritual truth without a real faith...

Yes, faith (sraddha) is necessary. Faith means anugatya (service under the guidance of a bona fide Guru) and saranagati (complete surrender),

dainya, atma-nivedana, goptrtve varana
'avasya raksibe krsna'—visvasa palana
bhakti-anukula matra karyera svikara
bhakti-pratikula bhava—varjanangikara

"Humility, self-submission, embracing the Lord's guardianship, maintaining the faith that 'Krishna will certainly protect me', engaging only in activities that are favourable to devotion, rejecting everything unfavourable to devotion."

You must understand this song. Pariksit Maharaj said, "We have such wealth as chaksu, karna, nasika, jihva, tvak (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin), and we must use it in a proper way." How to use all this properly is the main things. We need some proper advice because our mind is always chanchal (চঞ্চল, fickle), it is always disturbed, always suggests so many things.

aichhana amara mana phire yena andha jana
supatha vipatha nahi jane

"My mind wanders like a blind man who cannot tell the right way from the wrong way."

'Thakura Vaishnava-gana' by Srila Narottam Das Thakur

The mind does not know what is the right way, what is the wrong way, it is blind. You must understand who can control your mind—your mind can be controlled by the Guru, Vaishnavs, Bhagavan. If you take their good advice and practise Krishna consciousness properly, your mind will become bosibhuta (বশীভুত, will come under your control). Do you understand what I am saying?

Always sing,

kabe habe bala se dina amara
aparadha ghuchi suddha name ruchi
krpa-bale ha'be hrdaye sanchara

"Please tell me, when will that day be mine? When will my offences be removed? When will the taste for the pure Name arise in my heart by the power of mercy?"

('Kabe habe bolo, se dina amar?' by Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur)

"When will my material desire be removed!?"

ara kabe nitaichand karuna karibe
samsara-vasana mora kabe tuchha ha'be

"When will Nitaichand give mercy to me? When will all my material desires become insignificant?"

'Prarthana' by Srila Narottam Das Thakur

"When will Nityananda Prabhu give His mercy? When will all these material things be removed from my heart!?"

kabe nityananda more kari' daya
chhadaibe mora visayera maya

"When will Nityananda be compassionate to me and relieve me from the mundane illusion?"

("Kabe habe bolo se dina amar" by Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur)

This kind of thinking must always come to you heart. This is the main thing. This kind of feelings must come...

Param Guru Maharaj told this Pastime. When Krishna came went to Vidura's house, Vidura's wife was in the bathroom at that time. As soon as she heard that Krishna had come, she immediately ran out of the bathroom, but she was not wearing proper clothes (she was nearly naked). Seeing her run out like this, Krishna quickly threw His uttariya onto her, "Hey, what are you doing? How can you come to Me like this?" Can you understand how strong was the feeling of Vidura's wife at that time? That kind of feeling should come to us also...

When Mahaprabhu once came to Jagannath temple, a lady climbed onto His shoulder. Govinda saw it and tried to chase her away, "Hey! What are you doing?!" but Mahaprabhu stopped him, "Stop, stop! Do not disturb her! She has so much desire to see the Lord, I do not have that kind of desire. She is very fortunate, do not disturb her."

The Aanyor Village
'During the parikrama, we pass a village called Aanyor when we go to see Govinda Kunda. One day, Madhavendra Puri was sitting there and chanting all day...'

Jaya 'guru-maharaja'
'The extraordinary beauty of your divine form shines with the exalted joy of benevolence, the brightness of divine sweetness.'

If an acharya does not practise with pranipatena, pariprasnena, sevaya, he cannot practise his acharya life like that. The same is true for everyone.
