"Gora Knows..."

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad

Bengali evening class in Sri Puri Dham

I have a question to you all—who was Kashi Misra in Dvapar-yuga? Who can tell me? Kubja. Have you heard this name? A lame, hunchbacked lady. She lived in Vrindavan and had one wish—she thought, "Krishna goes to all places, He stays with all gopis. It would be good if He could spend a night with me..." Krishna stays in every gopi's house—whichever house you go to, you can see Krishna there. So, what happened to Kubja in the end? Krishna told her, "Your desire will be fulfilled in this Kali-yuga." In Kali-yuga, Kubja took birth as Kashi Mishra and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Krishna Himself, stayed in a Gambhira room in his house—not just for one night, but for eighteen years!

Much time has passed now, much has been said, and I will not speak much longer, but I just want to say one thing, and you may not like what I will say. You have all come here to do what? Can you tell me? What have you come to do here in Puri Dham? You need to examine yourself. You have spent money, etc., but what have you come to do here? Tell me.

Devotee, quietly: Sadhu-sanga...

I also gave up a job in a college, I left my mother and father and came to the lotus feet of my Guru. I used to earn a lot of money, but I left everything and came to the lotus feet of my Guru. One time I told Gurudev, "I want to go to Bangladesh—I have inherited some land there. I want to sell it and give the money to you." Gurudev asked me, "How many days will it take?" I said, "Seven days." Then he asked, "How much will you get for it?" I said, "Twenty lakhs." Then Gurudev said, "If I give you this money today, do you still need to go?" I could not say anything after that in front of Gurudev. I understood that Gurudev did not want to lose me and he let me understand that I was worth more than twenty lakhs...

Anyhow, have I not told you when I feel sad? There is a saying in Bengali, "Dase mile kari kaj hari jiti nahi laj." [Many drops make light work; two heads are better than one.] We are here like ten sticks together—if you take one stick, it is easy to break it, but if you take ten sticks together, you cannot break them.

And one more thing is that you have come here and you must think that this place is your home. One time, Prabhupad said, "Where are you going?! Where is your home?! Even if your home is on fire, you do not have to go there!" There is a [Bengali] book by Srila Sridhar Maharaj called Harikathamrita, it is written there. Read it. My [Bengali] book called Upadesh is also there, read it. I went to the kitchen in the evening and saw how few devotees were there, working so hard, cutting the vegetables...

People come to me weeping, "Maharaj, we have no money, we are so poor..." but you must have a heart—you must have service mood. When I went to the kitchen I saw those ten people working there, and yesterday they were washing the dishes until after ten at night. They fed you at noon also and while everybody was resting one person was washing the dishes all afternoon... If only everybody did this together. When you wash dishes at home and when you wash dishes here, it is not the same. Who do you wash the dishes for here? For the Lord. I am telling this to you gently, with a smile, but I am feeling pain inside.

Ultimately, it means that the Lord is not using you for His service. You come here, you go for a walk, you play around, but why have we come to Jagannath Puri? We have come to serve. Here is Gaura Nitai, here are Vaishnavs, and we have come here to serve them.

Today we went to Bhuvaneswar. I had called them in advance, arranged the prasadam, arranged the transport, but I see that the people who have come do not serve, they do not have devotion to their Guru—they run to the bus to take a good seat first. I know everything, and I cannot forgive that.

I see everything but I do not say anything. Remember one thing. Srila Sridhar Maharaj said that Prabhupad was as hard as a lightning outside and as soft as a flower inside. I have always wanted to learn from Prabhupad.

I saw yesterday a devotee was cleaning the bushes, was washing the rice. You may think, "He will do everything himself," but he will not be able to do it—everybody is here, everybody can help, but I do not see anyone doing it. At their homes they do work, but at the temple they rest and sleep... I am saying it straight, in plain words.

Somebody is old and cannot do service, but I see here old people struggling but serving—seventy-, eighty-year-old people; and we are young people, there are young boys and girls—they only care to go out. When I give a lecture, even when I come to their houses for preaching, I see that they do not listen to the Hari-katha properly. My eyes are as sharp as an arrow.

Remember this.

Only Krishna is your friend—if you make Him your friend.
