A Fugitive's Plea

(Spoken by His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj on 12 November 1981)

Srila Madhavendra Puri, perhaps, said,

kamadinam kati na katidha palita durnidesa,
tesam jata mayi na karuna na trapa nopasantih
utsrjyaitan atha yadu-pate! sampratam labdha-buddhis
tvam ayatah saranam-abhayam mam niyunksvatma-dasye

"O Lord! How many kinds of wicked orders from lust and others I followed! They had no mercy on me, nor were they ever satisfied! O Krishna! Suddenly, I managed to leave their side and got some good intelligence—I have surrendered at Your fearless lotus feet, please engage me now as Your servant."

(Sri Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhuh, 3.2.25)

"O Lord of the Yadu dynasty, Krishna, I have come to Your feet to explain my position. Please consider it:

"Kamadinam kati na katidha palita durnidesa. For so long I have been following my lords: Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Mada, Matsarya (Lust, Anger, Greed, Illusion, Madness, Envy). To satisfy them, I have left no stone unturned. These inner six enemies very cruelly and very harshly exacted such a great amount of service from me, but no nothing—not a drop of peace—have I got from them as my remuneration. I have not been paid anything. From time immemorial, I have been rendering service to these enemies of mine, but up until now I have not seen any satisfaction in their faces, I could not propitiate them—they are just as hard as before.

"Palita durnidesa. What have I not done? Whatever they ordered, I instantaneously obeyed that. In the middle of the night, my lord said, 'Oh, you must go there and steal some fruit.' Another time, the Krodha (Anger) aroused me at midnight and told me to kill somebody, 'This is your enemy, you must charge them with a bomb!' I obeyed all that. So, what have I not done to carry out the orders of these enemies living within me?

"Now I am disgusted, my Lord; now I am fully disgusted... Na trapa: I am not even ashamed of what I have done. Nopasantih: no reaction has ever come to me to ask them for any temporary truce, 'I want to stop for the time being, I cannot do it any more. Give me some rest.'

"Yet, now somehow—I do not know why, how—I have run to You. I have run to You! Utsrjyaitan: I was able to avoid their vigilant eyes and I have run to You!

"I have approached You (saranam-abhayam). I have got a dictation from inside that You are the real shelter who can save me from those enemies. Mam niyunksvatma-dasye: please give me some engagement. If You engage me, then they will all run away in fear. As soon as they hear that You have given me shelter and some engagement, then whatever their account book may say they will all run away in fear."

So, if we can make any contact with that plane of nirguna bhumi, all other plenary influences will withdraw at once.

নেহাভিক্রমনাশোঽস্তি প্রত্যবায়ো ন বিদ্যতে ।
স্বল্পমপ্যস্য ধর্ম্মস্য ত্রায়তে মহতো ভয়াৎ ॥

nehabhikrama-naso 'sti pratyavayo na vidyate
svalpam apy asya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat

"On this path there can be no loss and no harm. The slightest practice of such a spiritual ideal saves one from the greatest fear."

(Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 2.40)

"I will be saved from a great disaster! Please, grant me some shelter."

That is the advice and instruction from our Guru, Madhavendra Puri: "No matter how, but run—the moment they become a little unmindful of you, run and take shelter of the Lord, then they will all run away."

Translation of the sloka from Sri Prapanna-jivanamritam (6.7):

A realization of the fact that the surrendered soul who discovers his eternal identity and denounces his perversity caused by the association of lust, anger, greed, madness, delusion, and hatred, is rescued forever from all evil pursuits by the devotional service of Lord Krsna—

"O Lord, for so long have I obeyed the unending, wicked dictates of lust, anger, greed, madness, delusion, and hatred, but they never took pity upon me, and I have felt neither shame nor the desire to abandon them. O Lord of the Yadus, after all this, I am leaving them behind. At last I have found my genuine sanity: I am surrendered wholly unto Your lotus feet, which are the abode of fearlessness. Please now engage me as Your personal servitor."

Translation of the sloka from Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita (2.22.16):

"O Lord! How many kinds of wicked orders from lust and others I followed! They had no mercy on me, nor were they ever satisfied! O Krishna! Suddenly, I managed to leave their side and got some good intelligence—I have surrendered at Your fearless lotus feet, please engage me now as Your servant."
