Shameless Life—Shameful Future

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Nabadwip Dham

We have got this body for the service of the Lord. We had been eating for so many births—when we were elephants, we ate so many plants, we finished so many banana trees; when we were pigs, we could finish mountains of stool—we never ate little, every day we ate so much; when we were cows, we ate all day and night. What did we get a mouth for now? Just to eat? No.

Sometimes I see some loaded bullock carts in this area. It is very hot here during March-May, but the bulls carry bricks and so much other heavy load in the heat, and when the bull cannot carry it, the driver starts to beat it. One time, the man who was driving a bullock cart went to a tea shop—he was very tired and was sitting at the tea stall, drinking tea, sweating and wiping his sweat. But his bull was standing in the heat, and I saw that bull was crying. The bull is crying, but the man is having tea and biscuits. Then, he started driving the bull again, but the bull was crying... What kind of life this bull got!

We also had such life. Fortunately, now we have got this human body, but if we do not use this body properly—if we do not use it for the service of our Guru, for the service of the Lord—then we will have to go there again. There is no doubt. When will we go? We do not have so much time left—maybe twenty-thirty-forty years more, is it not? Who knows when it will be time to leave.

দিন যায় মিছা কাজে নিশা নিদ্রাবশে ।

dina yaya michha kaje nisa nidra-base

My days are passed in useless work and nights are wasted on sleeping. It never occurs to me that there is death sitting next to me.

('Durlabha manava janma labhiya' by Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur)

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is an ocean of mercy. Nityananda Prabhu is an ocean of mercy—people would beat Him, but He wanted to rescue the world and He asked them, "Beat Me if you want, but chant the Holy Name!" When a sadhu is attacked, he still says, "I want to distribute the real benefit everywhere, it is my duty. I must rescue everybody and use them for the service of the Lord!" People cannot understand this. How many days do we have left? Maybe thirty, forty, or fifty years only...

আমার জীবন সদা পাপে রত
নাহিক পুণ্যের লেশ ।
পরেরে উদ্বেগ দিয়াছি যে কত

amara jivana sada pape rata

My life is always engrossed in sin. There is not a trace of piety in it. I have caused others so much anxiety and trouble.

নিজ সুখ লাগি' পাপে নাহি ডরি
দয়াহীন স্বার্থপর ।
পর সুখে দুঃখী সদা মিথ্যাভাষী
পরদুঃখ সুখকর ॥

nija sukha lagi' pape nahi dari
daya-hina svartha-para
para-sukhe duhkhi sada mithya-bhasi
para-duhkha sukha-kara

I am never afraid to engage in sinful activities for the sake of my own happiness. I am unkind and selfish. I always tell lies. I am unhappy when others are happy, and happy when others are unhappy.

We are not afraid to commit sin for our own pleasure. Seeing others' misery we become happy (we are so happy when others suffer), and seeing others' happiness we become upset. We always tell lies...

We have five karmendriya, instruments: feet, hands, rectum, genitals, mouth (পদ, পাণি, পায়ু, উপস্থ, বাক, pada, pani, payu, upastha, vak); five jnanendriya, senses: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin (চক্ষু, কর্ণ, নাসিকা, জিহ্বা, ত্বক্, chaksu, karna, nasika, jihva, tvak); and mind, intelligence, and ego (মন, বুদ্ধি, অহঙ্কার, man, buddhi, ahankar). The ears hear so many nonsense talks, and they become tired. The ear says, "I cannot do it anymore!" Is it not so? The eyes see so many things, and one day the eye says, "I cannot do it anymore, I am tired!" and we cannot see anything anymore. The mouth also says, "You have been putting all kinds of food into me (chewed, sucked, licked and drunk), I am tired!"—in the end all teeth are gone. Is it not so? The senses become tired and one day they cannot function anymore. Intelligence too—when we get old, we lose intelligence... Our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, mind, intelligence, ego, they all become tired and finally say, "I cannot do it anymore."

When we are young, we have energy, but we do not use that energy in the proper way. If you do not use your energy in the proper way, then one day you will find you have no energy left.

For the sake of my own prestige I pretend to behave well. I am ruined by greed and always want something.

For our own name and fame, we adopt intolerable behaviour.

I am never afraid to engage in sinful activities for the sake of my own happiness.

Eternal Values
'How many days will you be alive in this world? Even if you are alive for thirty more years, then you will sleep for fifteen years, and the other fifteen you have other things to do, and the time is gone. How many days do we have to do Hari-bhajan? You must count it.'

Nistha [be fixed]: what I will do, I will do that every day. 'I am only doing today,
next day I am not doing'—this is not devotion, this is emotion.
