This Is Your Medicine, Take It

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
22 January 2012, Nandigram (Andhra Pradesh, South India)

You have heard the pastimes of Indra and of Nrisinghadev. When Hiranyakasipu worshipped Brahma, he asked Brahma, "I want to be immortal," but Brahma said, "I do not have such power. Even I also have to leave this body one day."

Brahma Himself says in Brahma-samhita,

isvarah paramah krsnah sach-chid-ananda-vigrahah
anadir adir govindah sarva-karana-karanam

"Krishna, who is known as Govinda, is the supreme controller. He has an eternal, blissful, spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin, for He is the prime cause of all causes."

(Sri Brahma-samhita, 5.1)

There are thirty-three crores (million) demigods—if we worship Lord Ganesh, Kartik will be angry; if we worship Siva, Parvati will be angry, and so on. There are thirty-three million demigods and we cannot worship all of them, but if you worship Krishna, then

'শ্রদ্ধা' শব্দে—বিস্বাস কহে সুদৃঢ় নিশ্চয় ।
কৃষ্ণে ভক্তি কৈলে সর্ব্বকর্ম্ম কৃত হয় ॥

'sraddha'-sabde—visvasa kahe sudrdha nischaya
krsne bhakti kaile sarva-karma krta haya

"Sraddha is firm, determined faith that by service to Krishna all actions are accomplished."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 22.62)

If you put water under the tree, it is not necessary to put water on the branches, leaves or anywhere else. In the same way, if you worship Krishna, you do not need to worship anyone else. Everything is arranged by Krishna.

We do something good, we want to go to heaven, but when Hiranyakasipu attacked heaven, all demigods, including even India, the king of heaven, ran away. Moreover, Indra himself once got a pig's body for twelve years—he had to forget that before he was Indra, the king of heaven.

We have very much attachment with family, that is why we do not tell you that you must leave your family. You can stay with your family, but try to be detached and remember the Lord:

আসক্তিরহিত সম্বন্ধসহিত ।
বিষয়সমূহ সকলি মাধব ॥

'asakti-rahita,' 'sambandha-sahita,'
visaya-samuha sakali 'madhava'

"When you are free from material attachment and establish relationship with the Lord, then you will see that everything around you is Lord Madhav Himself."

('Vaishnav ke?' verse 12)

You can stay with your family, but do not be so much attached to it. You are not the proprietor of your house—you are only a security guard, a gatekeeper of your house.

So, I am praying to everybody—Mahaprabhu brought Harinam-sankirtan, this is your medicine, take it. If you take this medicine, you will be rescued from this world. When you get a good doctor and good medicine, your disease will be removed. This Harinam-sankirtan is your medicine.

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

"Only chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name—there is no other way, no other way, no other way."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, 7.76)

Mahaprabhu asked Haridas Thakur, "How will this maha-mantra rescue souls all over the world?" Haridas Thakur answered, "Nama-abhase mukti paibe—through the chanting of the Holy Name everybody will be rescued from this material environment."

jive daya name ruchi vaisnava seva
iha bahi sanatana nahi ara dharma

"Be merciful to the souls, chant the Holy Name, and serve the Vaishnavs. Sanatan, besides this, there is no other religion."

These are Mahaprabhu's worlds. Jive daya means giving benefit, being kind to the jiva souls. A devotee can rescue others. I have told you this example before—suppose you grow a coconut tree, you cannot drink that coconut water yourself; you must first give it to Krishna, then you can take prasadam. This is how you can rescue, you can give benefit to others—in this way the coconut tree gets benefit. Name ruchi means relishing the Holy Name. How will that taste come? How is it possible? This taste will come, but when you are sick and some good food comes in front of you, you do not feel any taste for it because your mouth is bitter. In the same way, we have some disease inside us—this disease is kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya (lust, anger, greed, attachment, illusion, envy), rupa, rasa, gandha, sabda, sparsa (being controlled by the senses of sight, taste, smell, hearing, touch). There are so many things inside us, that is why we do not get the taste through chanting. We must pray to the devotees of the Lord to get relief...

Weaknesses
'If in this life you think, 'This is my house, I will not leave this house,' then next birth you will become a lizard. Attachment is a very dangerous thing. The kind of attachment you have for your family life should come for your Guru, the Vaishnavs, and Bhagavan.'

Sri Sri Damodarastakam
'O Lord, although You are able to give all kinds of benedictions, I do not pray to you for the boon of impersonal liberation, nor the highest liberation of eternal life in Vaikuntha, nor any other boon [which may be obtained by executing the nine processes of bhakti]. O Lord, I simply wish that this form of Yours as Bala Gopala in Vrndavana may ever be manifest in my heart, for what is the use to me of any other boon besides this?'

Ego: somebody says something to me, somebody calls me something,
and I cannot tolerate that—it is a play of Kali.
