Two Oceans of Pastimes

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad

Question: Today is the disappearance day of Srila Raghunath Das Goswami, Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, and Raghunath Bhatta Goswami. Could we hear about them from you?

When Raghunath Das Goswami's Gurudev left, he expressed in his sloka, "I have come to Vrindavan, but in separation from my Guru I see Govardhan is like a tiger coming to eat me! I see Radha Kunda—the highest place of Radha-Krishna's Pastimes—looks like a snake coming to eat me." How much separation he felt to say like this...

You all know about Das Goswami's vairagya, renunciation... Before he got mercy from Nityananda Prabhu at the Panihati chira-dadhi mahotsav, when Sriman Mahaprabhu came to Santipur, Raghunath went to meet with Him. He was a young boy at that time, and when he met Mahaprabhu, he got His mercy—from that time he became udasa (উদাস, indifferent)—he did not think about the material world, he always thought about the spiritual world and about Mahaprabhu's lotus feet. He tried many times to join Mahaprabhu, and Mahaprabhu taught him many good things,

স্থির হঞা ঘরে যাও, না হও বাতুল ।

sthira hana ghare yao, na hao batula

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 16.237)

"Go back to your home, do not be crazy."

মর্কট-বৈরাগ্য না কর লোক দেখাঞা ।
যথাযোগ্য বিষয় ভুঞ্জ' অনাসক্ত হঞা ॥

markata-vairagya na kara loka dekhana
yatha-yogya visaya bhunja' anasakta hana

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 16.238)

"Do not show your false renunciation to people. You should serve accepting material things, but without attachment."

সে ছল সেকালে কৃষ্ণ স্ফুরাবে তোমারে ।
কৃষ্ণকৃপা যাঁরে, তাঁরে কে রাখিতে পারে ॥

se chhala se-kale krsna sphurabe tomare
krsna-krpa yanre, tare ke rakhite pare

"Krishna will reveal to you how you can come. Who can stop the one who has got mercy of Krishna?"

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 16.241)

gramya-katha na sunibe, gramya-varta na kahibe
bhala na khaibe ara bhala na paribe
amani manada hana krsna-nama sada la'be
vraje radha-krsna seva manase karibe

"Do not listen to the mundane talks, do not listen to the mundane news. Do not eat fancy food, do not wear fancy clothes. Do not expect honour to yourself, but offer all respect to others. Always chant the Holy Name of Krsna, and in your mind serve Radha-Krsna."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.236-237)

Mahaprabhu also gave him service—He personally gave him a gunja mala and a Govardhan sila (gunja mala means Radharani, and Govardhan sila means Krishna). If you read Chaitanya-charitamrita, you can see how renounced his life in Puri was.

When he first came to Mahaprabhu, Mahaprabhu engaged him in service to the Vaishnavs, "Serve the Vaishnavs and you will get mercy from the Lord." How did he then get mercy from Nityananda Prabhu? He served the devotees of Mahaprabhu—he arranged their prasad. After he got Nityananda Prabhu's mercy, he went to Mahaprabhu and joined Him.

There are so many stories about his pastimes and life...

You know that there was one Vraja basi who every day brought him some buttermilk (matha, মাঠা), in a dona (দোনা), a pot made from the lotus leaves taken at Radha Kunda. One time, however that Vraja basi could not go to Radha Kunda, so he brought the pot from Surya Kunda. Raghunath Das Goswami immediately could recognise that the pot was not coming from Radha Kunda. He asked, "Where did you bring this dona from?" The Vraja basi replied, "I brought it from Surya Kunda." Raghunath Das Goswami threw that pot with the buttermilk away. This is the chastity of Radharani-gan, Radharani-jan (Radharani's very own). He was fanatic about Srimati Radharani...

As for Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, he was born in Jhamatpur, Bardhaman district of Bengal. He is Nityananda-jan, Nityananda-gan (Nityananda's man)—he got mercy of Nityananda Prabhu and composed Chaitanya-charitamrita... How did he get that mercy?

When a priest called Gunarnav Misra did a programme in Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami's house, he showed respect to Mahaprabhu but not to Nityananda Prabhu. As a result, Nityananda Prabhu gave His mercy to Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami and told him, "Do not stay here, it is bad association. Come to Vrindavan."

He came to Vrindavan and stayed in Vrindavan and Govardhan. Once, when he was paying his obeisance to Madan Mohan, he got His mercy—Madan Mohan's garland fell on his neck. Later, he wrote, "এই গ্রন্থ লেখায় মোরে মদনমোহন, ei grantha lekhaya more Madana Mohana: Madan Mohan is writing this scripture through me." He is a powerful devotee of our line...

Today this Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami's disappearance day. Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, Raghunath Das Goswami and others stayed at Radha Kunda and after their disappearance the samadhis were also made there. When we go to Vrindavan, we go to his samadhi-mandir, as well as the samadhi-mandirs of Raghunath Bhatta Goswami, Raghunath Das Goswami.

Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami came after the six goswamis, and he composed Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita—he gave there a very good siddhanta, and you can understand how much mercy he got from Nityananda Prabhu...
