krsna yadi chhute bhakte bhukti mukti diya
kabhu bhakti na dena rakhena lukaiya

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, 8.18)

"If you ask the Lord for some other things, Krishna will give that to you and make you happy, but He will withdraw devotion from you." You cannot do what is unfavourable to devotion. I told it yesterday also.

Today I got a letter from a devotee—he sent his son for good training, to learn in the devotees' association, but his son had become addicted to marijuana and now the father wants some advice from me. He sent the boy to stay under the guidance of a sannyasi, but that sannyasi said, "Yes, it is no problem, you can take marijuana," and now he is writing to me... What kind of advice am I to give? Even for a nondevotee, smoking is very bad for health.

I remember when I was fourteen, my uncle found out that his son (my cousin who was about sixteen at that time) had started smoking. When he heard about it, he wanted to see if it was true or not, so one day he hid somewhere to watch his son. My cousin was in his room and said he was going to the bathroom. The bathroom was in an open place in the garden—the territory of our house was large, like the area of the temple. He went to that garden and had a smoke. When my uncle caught his son smoking, he tied him with a rope to a tree and beat him for half an hour to remove the smoking habit. I can still remember that. That was the kind of punishment.

Also our school was a coordinated school, and if some twelve-sixteen years old boy told something bad to a girl—even if a boy said to a girl something like, "I love you"—you cannot imagine what kind of punishment he would get for that. Near the school there was a field—they would take an empty coconut shell, make a hole in it and put the boy's foot inside, he had to stand on that foot and have the other foot in the air and look at the sun for half an hour. This is the kind of punishment we had at school. It was very strong.

The Kali-yuga's people are now addicted to ganja, addicted to drinking whiskey, addicted to smoking, it is a very difficult situation...

When I was twelve years old, I did not even know that tea was hot. One time I went to some wedding ceremony, I was a school boy at that time, twelve-thirteen years old, and at the wedding they gave everybody tea. I drank it like water (pouring into mouth without touching to the lips) and burnt my face and spilled it all over myself. This was the first and the last time I had tea. I never take tea. I do not know how to play cards, I have never seen marijuana or ganja in my life: I heard about and have seen people smoking cigarettes, beedi, but I do not even know what colour ganja is.

People are ruining their lifetime...
