Nityananda: Our All in All

আর কবে নিতাইচাঁদ করুণা করিবে ।
সংসার-বাসনা মোর কবে তুচ্ছ হ'বে ॥

ara kabe nitaichand karuna karibe
samsara-vasana mora kabe tuchha ha'be

"When will Nitaichand give mercy to me? When will all my material desires become insignificant?"

কবে নিত্যানন্দ মোরে করি' দয়া ।
ছাড়াইবে মোর বিষয়ের মায়া ॥

"When will Nityananda be compassionate to me and relieve me from the mundane illusion?"

It is necessary to always meditate on this in your heart. "When will Nitaichand give His mercy to me? When will my desires become insignificant? When will Nityananda be merciful to me and relieve me from the material illusion? When will He rescue me from the material world? I have so much attachment to the material world, when will He rescue me from this kind of attachment?" We must be free from material attachment and we must establish ourselves in the relationship with the Lord.

আসক্তিরহিত সম্বন্ধসহিত ।
বিষয়সমূহ সকলি মাধব ॥

'asakti-rahita,' 'sambandha-sahita,'
visaya-samuha sakali 'madhava'

"When you are free from material attachment and establish relationship with the Lord, then you will see that everything around you is Lord Madhav Himself."

('Vaishnav ke?' verse 12)

There must be only relation with the Lord and no material attachment. When there is no material attachment, there remains only relation with the Lord.

মূকং করোতি বাচালং পঙ্গুং লঙ্ঘয়তে গিরিম্ ।
যৎকৃপা তমহং বন্দে শ্রীগুরুং দীনতারণম্ ॥

mukam karoti vachalam pangum langhayate girim
yat krpa tam aham vande sri-gurum dina-taranam

"The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill—all it takes is mercy from Gurudev."

First of all, I am offering my full obeisance at the lotus feet of Om Vishnupad Jagad Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, begging him for his causeless mercy, after that I am offering my obeisance to all Guru-varga, to all my God-brothers and sisters, to all devotees and all of you praying for your mercy.

Today is an auspicious day of Varaha-dvadasi, the appearance day of Varahadev. There were two brothers, Hiranyakasipu and Hiranyaksa—Hiranyakasupu was killed by Nrisinghadev, and Hiranyaksa was killed by Varahadev (the Lord assumed the form of a boar and killed him). Today, we first offer a good worship and make a good sweet rice offering to Varahadev, then we break the Ekadasi fast.

Today is also the eve of Nityananda Prabhu's appearance day.

কবে নিত্যানন্দ মোরে করি' দয়া ।
ছাড়াইবে মোর বিষয়ের মায়া ॥

"When will Nityananda Prabhu give His mercy to me? When will I chant Nityananda's name?" It is necessary to always think about it. There is no hope for us if Sriman Nityananda Prabhu does not give us His mercy. Nityananda Prabhu is Guru-tattva...

You have heard that Raghunath Das Goswami had come to Mahaprabhu time many times, but every time Mahaprabhu sent him back—Raghunath Das Goswami did not get His mercy. When Nityananda Prabhu came to Panihati, He sat there under a tree and Raghunath Das Goswami, taking the permission of his father and his father's men, came there to take darshan of Nityananda Prabhu. Seeing Raghunath, Nityananda Prabhu said, "Ai, chora, ai! Come here, thief, come!" Why did he call him a thief? What did he steal? Nityananda Prabhu called him a thief because he went to Mahaprabhu going past Nityananda Prabhu. It is first necessary to get Nityananda Prabhu's mercy, but he made a mistake and went to Mahaprabhu first.

Mahaprabhu told him so many times, "Go back to your home, do not be crazy. Do not show false renunciation to impress others! Yatha-yogya visaya bhunja' anasakta hana (যথাযোগ্য বিষয় ভুঞ্জ' অনাসক্ত হঞা): stay in your house but without any attachment." Later, after Raghunath Das Goswami had arranged the chira-dahi mahotsav, he came to Nityananda Prabhu and asked Him or His mercy, "Please save me from this ocean of material world!" Then Nityananda Prabhu told him, "Go, now you can go, now all your bondage is gone." He did that Vaishnav seva and got mercy of Nityananda Prabhu.

That is why it is said, "Nitaiyer karuna habe Vraje Radha Krsna pabe, dhara Nitaiyer charan duhkhani (নিতাইয়ের করুণা হবে ব্রজে রাধাকৃষ্ণ পাবে, ধর নিতাইয়ের চরণ দুঃখানি)—when Nitai bestows His mercy you will reach Radha-Krishna in Vraja. Grasp Nitai's feet!" If we can simply remember and think about Nityananda Prabhu, we can get His mercy, He is Guru-tattva.

আশ্রয় লইয়া ভজে তারে কৃষ্ণ নাহি ত্যজে,
আর সব মরে অকারণে

asraya laiya bhaje tare krsna nahi tyaje
ara saba mare akarane

"Krishna never leaves those who have taken shelter in Him. All others simply die in vain."

জগাই মাধাই হৈতে মুঞি সে পাপিষ্ঠ ।
পুরীশের কীট হৈতে মুঞি সে লঘিষ্ঠ ॥
মোর নাম শুনে যেই তার পুণ্য ক্ষয় ।
মোর নাম লয় যেই তার পাপ হয় ॥

jagai madhai haite muni se papistha
purisera kita haite muni se laghistha
mora nama sune yei punya ksaya
mora nama laya yei tar papa haya

"I am more sinful than Jagai and Madhai and lower than the worms in the stool. If anyone hears my name, they lose all auspiciousness; if anyone takes my name, they become sinful."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, 5.205-206)

"Who in this world but Nityananda Prabhu can save such a sinful person as I am? Besides Nityananda Prabhu there is no one in this world who can rescue me! Except Him, there is nobody in this entire world..." Nityananda Prabhu is extremely merciful,

উত্তম, অধম, কিছু না করে বিচার ।
যে আগে পড়য়ে, তারে করয়ে নিস্তার ॥

uttama, adhama, kichhu na kare vichara
ye age padaye, tare kraye nistara

Nityananda Prabhu does not consider who is good and who is bad, He saves anyone who falls before Him.

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, 5.208-209)

He does not differentiate who is lower, who is higher—He saves whoever falls at His feet. Tell me, who is there in this world besides Him?
