Sri Gita: Primary Scripture His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
I have been speaking for an hour now—do you have any questions? Question: What is the best time to read Srimad Bhagavad-gita? You can read Gita at any time, it is not a problem. Gita is our primary scripture, and you can read it, there is no problem. Read Gita—memorise it and keep it in your heart. I was just speaking about this ,
ananyas chintayanto mam, ye janah paryupasate "I bear the responsibility of acquiring and protecting the necessities of My fully dependent devotees who are always absorbed in thought of Me, and who worship Me in every way." (Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 9.22)
api chet suduracharo, bhajate mam ananya-bhak "If even a very sinful person serves Me exclusively with devotion, he should be regarded as saintly, for his resolve is perfect." (Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 9.30) What did Krishna say last? Krishna said to Arjun (9.27), "Yat karosi yad asnasi... Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever meditation you do, do it all for Me," but finally, when Arjun said, "I am Your disciple, I surrender to You," Krishna said (18.66), "Give up everything." There it is also said,
ye yatha mam prapadyante, tams tathaiva bhajamy aham "Howsoever people surrender to Me, I accordingly reward them. Being the ultimate goal of all paths, I am the objective to be attained by all. O Partha, all men follow My various paths." (Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 4.11) There are five different moods of service—some serve and worship the Lord in santa-rasa (neutral mood), some in dasya-rasa (as a servant), some in sakhya-rasa (as a friend), some in vatsalya-rasa (as a parent), some in madhura-rasa (as a paramour). And here Krishna said, "Howsoever people surrender to Me, I accordingly reward them. Being the ultimate goal of all paths, I am the objective to be attained by all. O Partha, all men follow My various paths." Also,
tad viddhi pranipatena, pariprasnena sevaya You will be able to attain knowledge by satisfying the divine master with submission, relevant inquiry, and sincere service. The enlightened souls who are learned in scriptural knowledge and endowed with direct realisation of the Supreme Absolute Truth will impart divine knowledge to you. (Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 4.34) It is necessary to learn this by heart, it is necessary to keep this in your heart. So many people read Gita, but this is not like reading any other books, it is necessary not only to learn it by heart and keep it in your heart, it is necessary to follow what is written in Gita.
“গোরার আমি, গোরার আমি” মুখে বলিলে নাহি চলে ।
"gorara ami, gorara ami" mukhe balile nahi chale Just saying, "I am Gora's! I am Gora's!" does not do. Only when you follow Gora's practices and Gora's conception will you get the proper result. (Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 8.6)
loka dekhana gora bhaja tilaka matra dhari' You show the world you serve Gora simply by wearing tilak but secretly you misbehave. Gora will catch you, you thief! (Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 8.7) Giving up 'monkey' renunciation, giving up false renunciation, it is necessary to be a true renunciate. You cannot become a sadhu just by dressing as a sadhu. Mahaprabhu told Raghunath Das Goswami, "Go back to your house, go back to your house,
markata-vairagya na kara loka dekhana "Do not show your false renunciation to people. Serve accepting material things, but without attachment." (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 16.238) Do not do service just to impress others. You can use material things, but without attachment—do not be attached to them. You can serve the Lord even in this material world. How?
'asakti-rahita,' 'sambandha-sahita,' "When you are free from material attachment and establish relationship with the Lord, then you will see that everything around you is Lord Madhav Himself." ('Vaishnav ke?' verse 12) It is not necessary to leave your family to serve the Lord, the only exception for whom it is necessary are those who distribute Hari-katha in this world because people will not listen to family people, but if a sannyasi tells something to them, then they listen to it. That is why, for preaching, it is necessary to take sannyas. Otherwise,
grhi ha-uka tyagi ha-uka bhakte bheda nai "There is no difference between devotees—be they householders or renunciants. If someone makes distinctions between them, they go to the hell of boiling oil. Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 17.22 "He is a householder, I am a sannyasi, I am much higher than him"—if somebody makes such distinction, they are going to the hell of boiling oil. This is written in the scriptures. If you read the scriptures, you will understand everything.
