Two Fables—Two Lessons

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Bengali evening class in Sri Puri Dham
10 July 2018, part 6

There is a saying in English—"where there is a will, there is a way." There are many stories that illustrate it also. For example, this one.

Once, there was a crow. Very thirsty, it was flying in the sky looking for some water, but it could not find water anywhere. Suddenly, it saw a clay pot at the bottom of which there was some water. The crow put its head inside the pot, but it could not reach the water. What did the wise crow do then? It brought some stone chips and as it put them inside the clay pot, the water rose and the crow could drink it. What is the moral? Where there is a will, there is a way.

There is also another story. I read it when I was seven or eight years old. It is called "Slow and Steady Wins the Race." When you play football, you must always be steady and aim at the gate to score the goal. Many people play football now all over the world, I also played it in childhood, but one time the ball hit me in my stomach and my mother told me not to play it again...

Guru Maharaj often told that it is necessary to be steady, and another thing he said we must have chastity. It is necessary to be a sincere seeker and have chastity—as a woman keeps chastity to her husband, or a husband to his wife, in the same way we must keep chastity to our Guru. Always remember this. Women do not mix with other men, and men do not mix with other women. These are straight words. Never engage in illegal sex.

So, do you know the story about "slow and steady"? One day, a hare had a bet with a tortoise. They had to come to a certain place and the one who came first would win. The hare said, "It is simple, the tortoise will walk so slow, and I will make it there in three leaps!" Halfway to the finish, the hare thought, "I am tired, let me take a nap. When I wake up, I will just make three leaps and get to the finish." What did the tortoise do? It kept walking steadily and reached the finish. When the hare woke up, it hurried to the finish, but when it got there it saw the tortoise was already there before it.

Remember this. It is necessary to be patient and steady.

We should not fight, should not quarrel—we must tolerate and harmonise with everybody, with the society and the people around you.
