Pure Kirtan Comes from Pure Heart

What is kirtan? Kirtan is not singing. Kirtan means making the Lord happy; even speaking Hari-katha is also giving happiness to the Lord.

Actually, those who have a great faith in Gurudev can get that valuable wealth from Gurudev. Gurudev's wealth is not a temple, not a building; Gurudev's wealth is his love and affection—that is Gurudev's property. If somebody leaves Gurudev, if somebody cannot tolerate Gurudev's chastisement and goes far away, it means their luck is very bad—kapal pora (কপাল পোড়া; they burn their own fortune). If you feel any lack of faith towards Gurudev, then you cannot enter the devotional world. If Gurudev is unhappy with somebody, then even Gaurasundar Mahaprabhu cannot accept them—Mahaprabhu cannot forgive one's offence if Gurudev is unhappy. You know that when Mahaprabhu called His chakra to kill Jagai and Madhai, it was Nityananda Prabhu [Guru-tattva] who stopped Him. Gurudev's position is the highest—it is not so easy to understand Gurudev as he is so great.

Anyway, our duty is to always service our guru and mission with all our life. I have already told you that. You must seek employment at our Gurudev's factory—this factory's name is Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math or any other name given to a preaching center by Gurudev. If you serve Gurudev, you will get real benefit. This is the main thing in our spiritual life.

Question: How does the guru affect the disciple and how does the disciple affect the guru?

It is a very nice question. There is a mahanta guru (the guru present as a person) and there is also a chaitya guru (the guru present in your heart). When a disciple sees that more and more service is coming to them, then they can realise whether Gurudev is happy with them or not. You can realise this through service. This is the effect that comes and you can understand through that if Gurudev is happy or not. If Gurudev gives you more and more service, then you can understand that Gurudev is happy with you. If Gurudev chastises you, that is also your fortune. Do not think that if Gurudev chastises you, it means he does not like you. It is not so. Such thinking is ignorance. When Gurudev chastises you, it means he has much love and affection for you—that is why he chastises you. That is the main thing.

You must be a proper, honest disciple. Your heart must be open, then you can hear properly what Gurudev wants to say. If you have something in your heart, if your heart is dirty or there are many obstacles in your heart, then you will not be able to hear Gurudev properly—when Gurudev says something, it will go into one ear and out the other, you will not be able to catch in your heart what Gurudev wanted to say.

From all this, you can understand whether Gurudev is happy with you or not.
