On Dawdling and Patience

You do not have to wait, "I will chant later. First let me live my whole life. I take to chanting the Holy Name when I am old." It is not so. In your old age, you will not be able to chant because so many diseases will come, so many problems will come at that time. The young age is the proper time to chant the Holy Name, to serve the Lord, to serve the guru and Vaishnavs. You have got actual time now, so do not wait.

আশ্রয় লইয়া ভজে তার কৃষ্ণ নাহি ত্যজে
আর সব মরে অকারণ

asraya la-iya bhaje, tare krsna nahi tyaje
ara saba mare akarana

"Krishna never leaves those who take shelter in Him and serve Him—all others die in vain."

Take shelter of a real guru and you will get real benefit in your spiritual life. You can stay in your house and from there you can be a member of this family, that will be good for you. Those who are not initiated are members of a mundane family, but when you take initiation, you become a member of Krishna's family. When you understand these things, you will feel that it is not necessary to wait. Take shelter of a real guru—try to understand what is necessary for that. You must not delay. What is necessary to take shelter? You do not have to leave your family, job, etc.—you only need to follow the instruction that you get from your guru and leave some small things. That is the main thing in your spiritual life.

Actually, what you need is to get service. You know, when you look for a job, you keep on applying to different places, sometimes you can send ten applications and not get the job. Still, do not become tired or disheartened—do not lose patience. It is necessary to have patience and one day you must get the real benefit. We often think, "How will I get service? How will I chant? How many years will it take?" We have no patience. But the truth is that it is necessary to have patience—no matter how long it may take, we must have tolerance and we must give honour to others. This what Mahaprabhu teaches us. You must wait for an instruction to come from your guru, and when an instruction comes, you must immediately take that instruction and start to do that service.

There are so many employment opportunities in this family of Krishna. In your mundane family, the number of 'employees' is always sufficient, but in Krishna's family the number of employees is always insufficient—always more employees are needed. The vacancies are unlimited here. If you can join this family and this unlimited service, then one day you will get some service. There is no doubt about that.
