(2/5) Purifying Engagement

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Preaching programme, Vijay Ekadasi
Translated into English from Bengali
19 February 2020, part 2

You can realise it yourself: how many days have you been in this world and how many days, and how, have you kept yourself engaged in discussing and hearing about the Lord and Sri Guru? This opportunity does not come all the time. For example, it is Wednesday today, and half of the day has already passed: it means that we have kept ourselves engaged in discussing and hearing about Krishna for half a day. Such engagement will bring genuine benefit to our souls if we can keep our mind focused and busy with the service of the Lord.

The Lord has given us some intelligence, and we can use this intelligence to stay in good association: under the influence of the association of saints, all our faults can go away. We have some guilt, or some faults, inside us, but by the mercy of sadhu-sanga, all impurity will go away from our hearts, and then remembrance of the Lord (bhagavat-katha smriti) and the desire to please the Lord will awaken in our hearts. That is why we must always engage ourselves in the service of the Lord and our Gurudev. This is our life.

We have got this human birth, and if we can give some time to the Lord, there is no loss in that. You can see that nobody has any problem: you have been listening to and chanting Sri Hari-kirtan and Guru-kirtan for several days. Has it done any harm to anybody's family or life in any way? It has not. You mistakingly believe that if you do not do something, everything will stop without you.

Genuine gurus do not use anything for their own pleasure – they always only think about the pleasure of Lord Krishna's senses. They always think how they can develop attachment to the service to Krishna and how they can increase their service day by day. This is what we must be focusing on. We have come to see a sadhu, but it is necessary to see a sadhu with your ears. Sri Sri Gurudev is the dearmost associate of the Lord, and if we can lend our ears to what he says, then everything will go in a smooth way for us. Otherwise, we will spend our days in this world in happiness and misery, and this human birth will be lost. When you get old, you will think, 'My days have passed in vain, what am I to do now?' You did not care to hear these things when you were young – you only thought about happiness, but when we are old and get all kinds of suffering, when in this world nobody cares about you, then you will remember that there is somebody who cares about you: the Lord. Before that, we never think about Him. When we suffer in our material life from various problems and illnesses, only then do we remember the Lord...

Try and Cry
''When will Nityananda Prabhu give His mercy to me? When will my material desires be removed from my heart? I have so many bad material desires! When will Nityananda remove them from my heart?' Always cry, always think about it.'

If you do not control your tongue, your mind will be disturbed.
