(7/8) Chanting or Vomiting?

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Preaching programme
Translated into English from Bengali
20 February 2020, part 7

You have heard Hari-katha for several days or even for one day. Ask some questions. What did you understand? What can you not understand?

*** Prabhu, you have just chanted a kirtan: 'Yasomati ajna peye Dhanistha anita'. Can you tell me what 'Dhanistha anita' means?

Devotee: A close friend of Radharani. She brings Krishna's prasad to Radharani.

Yes, you understand it!

Another devotee: It is some prasad that is brought.

No, Dhanistha is a Vraja gopi's name. Mother Yasoda orders her to take Krishna's prasad to Radharani.

যশোমতী-আজ্ঞা পেয়ে ধনিষ্ঠা-আনীত ।
শ্রীকৃষ্ণপ্রসাদ রাধা ভুঞ্জে হয়ে প্রীত ॥

yasomati-ajnapeye dhanistha anita
sri-krsna-prasada radha bhunje haye prita

"Being requested by Yasoda, Dhanistha brings Sri Krishna's remnants to Radha, who eats them joyfully."

(Bhoga Arati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)

I have heard that people at this house say, 'Radhe! Radhe!' Their water is rotten – they have had too much rain, that is why they say, 'Radhe! Radhe!' How daring they are... When you go to Ekachakra, you will hear everybody say, 'Jay Nitai!' There is even a group called 'Jay Nitai' there. In Balisar, Bangladesh, there was one sadhu who always said, 'Jay Nitai, jay Nitai!' Commonly, Hindu people living in Bangladesh are rich. So, some dacoits thought that Hindu sadhu must have had much money. One day, they came to his door and cried, 'Jay Nitai! Jay Nitai!' The sadhu thought that some devotees must have come to him. As soon as he opened the door, the dacoits took a gun out and the man had to give them the key from his chest where he kept his money. So, some take Nitai's name and come to rob you – they enjoy with the Lord's things.

Stealing means using the Lord and making trade with the Lord or Gurudev. Some claim, 'I am Srila Sridhar Maharaj's disciple' and do business using their Guru. You can see photographs of Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaj or Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj or our temple's Deities in some shops in Nabadwip – shopkeepers show, 'Look, I am Gurudev's disciple' to attract customers; they do this to promote their business. So, there are people who use gurus and trade using their names. Some also go on collection taking the name of Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math (they collect in the name of the temple but take the money for themselves)... There are such people...

People come to a house, say, 'Radhe! Radhe!' and get alms. You know, sometimes some people go for collection at a market on a Sunday or some other day. They come to a stall, quickly blurt out, 'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare!' and when somebody is giving them a coin, they rush them, 'Come on, give, give quickly, we have to go to the next place!' [His Divine Grace and devotees laugh.] Sometimes, they also come and rush so much that they cannot even chant the maha-mantra properly. They come and say, 'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare', then they forget what goes next, so they just carry on, 'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare'. They vomit the Lord's Name and then eat that...

People sing lila-kirtans; some sing pala-kirtans; some dance and sing showing off their singing skills. Some people also sing on the trains. I asked once a boy, 'What is your problem? Why are you singing and begging in trains?' The boy replied, 'I have to earn money to support my family.' I offered the boy to come to the temple and told him that I would give him food, clothes, a room, everything. He came with me, but three days later, he ran away. Such people cannot be tamed.

There are also some people in Bengal called sarchara (সরছাড়া; skimmers). 'Sar' is a film that forms on the surface of milk when you heat it. So, there are people who always look for some houses where there is Vaishnav seva held and where devotees feed others: they come and 'skim the film' everywhere.

There are such people – they do not like to hear Hari-katha; they only come to fill their bellies with food and their pockets with donations. Why do so many people like to wear saffron clothes in Vrindavan? To enjoy. Because those who wear saffron clothes get more donations. They put on a saffron uttariya on top but have a thick rope underneath it.

One time, a sannyasi called Mukunda Saraswati gave a cloth to Srila Sanatan Goswami. Do you know what Srila Jagadananda Pandit did to him? He was going to strike him with a pot! He could not tolerate it, 'Mukunda Saraswati is a sannyasi from another sampradaya! How can you wear his cloth?!' The story was like this. Srila Sanatan Goswami went begging that day, and Mukunda Saraswati gave him a saffron cloth as alms. Sanatan Goswami decided to test Jagadananda Pandit. He tied it as turban on his head (like Rama Krishna or Vivekananda did), showing he had become a great sadhu, a sannyasi. Seeing Sanatan Goswami wearing a saffron cloth on his head, Jagadananda Pandit melted: he remembered Mahaparabhu, thinking that Mahaprabhu must have given the cloth to Sanatan Goswami, 'When did Prabhu give you this cloth? Have you seen Him? Where is He!?' Sanatan Goswami replied, 'No, Mahaprabhu did not give it to me. Mukunda Saraswati gave it to me.' Jagadananda Pandit was cooking rice at this time, and when he heard Sanatan Goswami's reply, he was going to strike him with the pot of boiling rice! Sanatan Goswami became shy: 'Seeing your love for Mahaprabhu, I can understand now why Mahaprabhu loved you so much! I wish I had as much attraction to Mahaprabhu as you have!' Sanatan Goswami, a great scholar, became shy in front of Jagadananda Pandit!

Sanatan-Dharma: Universal Religion
'Everything in this world is born and exists for the service to the Lord, and the sanatan-dharma (your religion) is to use everything for the service to the Lord. It is not only my religion, or your religion, everybody's religion should be one.'

When you go to work, take also some prasadam with you; try not to eat anything outside.
