(9) Lord Is Always Merciful His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
I have mentioned the pastime of the demoness Putana today. She came to kill the Lord when He was lying down, about to fall asleep. Although the Lord was resting, He could see everything: He can see everything even when He is asleep. He knew that Putana was coming, but when she came, He saw that she came dressed as a gopi, wearing tilaks and Tulasi neckbeads. She looked just like a beautiful gopi. Seeing her appearance, Krishna was charmed and gave her the place of His mother – He gave her the right to feed Him her breast milk. But, as you all know, there was poison smeared on her breast. Krishna thought, 'I must take her life and give her mercy.' Then, Gopal (Krishna) began to drink her milk, and as He took her breast into His mouth, He began to suck life out of her. Putana cried, 'Leave me, Gopal! Leave me! Stop it! Let me go!' But Gopal said to Himself, 'I do not catch anyone so easily, but once I do catch somebody, I do not let them go so easily.' As Gopal made her run out of the house, Putana ran into a nearby field and, assuming her gigantic demoniac form, fell unconscious. You know that when people die, they put their bodies on a wooden pyre and burn them. But Putana's body was enormous, so the Vraja basis had to make several pyres and chop her body into pieces (hands, head, legs, and so on). When they started fire and began burning her body, the whole Vrindavan became filled with the scents of sandalwood and camphor. When our bodies are burnt, do they smell of sandalwood and camphor? But in Vrindavan, everybody was asking, 'Where is this smell of sandalwood and camphor coming from?' And others would explain, 'Oh, they are burning Putana's body.' That is how we can understand that the Lord bestowed His mercy on her. Therefore, the Lord is always merciful to us. He is always with us. We must always remember this. Never forget this. You always forget everything – you are the soul who are forgetful of Krishna... Jay Srila Guru Maharaj ki jay. We will chant some kirtan now and then finish.
