Mahaprabhu's Teachings (2): His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Grihastha Vaishnavs must be always careful with bad association.
asat-sanga-tyaga,—ei vaisnava-achara "A Vaishnav always rejects inauspicious association. One category of unholy people are those who mix with women, and another one is those who have no devotion to Krishna." (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.22.84) Nityananda Prabhu's preaching was also similar to Mahaprabhu's preaching. You will get these verses in Sri Chaitanya-bhagavat. Once, some dacoits wanted to attack the house where Nityananda Prabhu was staying—they tried to come inside the house one night, second night, third night, but they could not. In the end, the leader of those dacoits, a brahman, became blind, and he surrendered to Nityananda Prabhu. Nityananda Prabhu told that brahman, the ringleader of the dacoits,
suna dvija, yateka pataka kaili tui "Listen, brahman! I will take away whatever sins you have committed if you do not commit them again. Give up envy, stealing, dacoiting, and all unholy activities, do not do it again. Take up the path of religious life and chant the Holy Name, then you can also deliver others. Call all the rogues and dacoits, gather them together and get them to take up the path of religious life." (Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 3.5.685-689) "Do not be jealous, do not steal anything from others any more, leave everything and chant the Holy Name. You must also call all the dacoits and tell them to chant the Holy Name!" The dacoits listened to Nityananda Prabhu—they left their bad habits, stopped stealing, etc.
deha-tyagadi yata, saba—tamo-dharma "Acts such as suicide are influenced by the mode of ignorance, and one does not attain Krishna through ignorance and passion." (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.4.57) "Those who are pure devotees do not leave their body out of anger." Sriman Mahaprabhu told this to Sri Sanatan Goswami who wanted to commit suicide by throwing himself under the chariot. Another thing that Mahaprabhu told is this:
অধমজনের যে আচার, যেন ধর্ম্ম ।
adhama-janera ye achara, yena dharma "Sometimes, even a great Vaishnav can engage in the same kind of activities as vile materialists. One can understand this only by the mercy of Krishna. So, amidst this danger of trying to judge others, some die and some may become saved." (Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 3.9.388-389) It means that the heart and sincerity of devotees is completely different from other—somebody who is a smartavadi (materialist), does not know and cannot understand the heart of a Vaishnav—they cannot give respect to a Vaishnav, they do not know how to behave with a Vaishnav. Sriman Mahaprabhu also said,
prabhu kahena,—'krsna-seva', 'vaisnava-sevana' "Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu replied, 'Without cessation continue chanting the Holy Name of Lord Krishna. Whenever possible, serve Him and His devotees, the Vaishnavs.'" (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 15.104) If you have Deities, if you have an altar, you cook, you make garlands, you serve Tulasi Devi. These are all different kinds of Krishna-seva, Guru-seva, Vaishnav-seva. You must engage in this service always, non-stop. Chant the Holy Name when you are working, when you are taking prasadam, when you are cooking, cutting vegetables. Always chant the Holy Name, incessantly, non-stop. Never stop your Krishna-sankirtan. And Mahaprabhu also told one more thing. Sometimes, you want to invite a Vaishnav—if you can give respect to the Vaishnav, if you can serve the Vaishnav properly, then you can invite them, otherwise you can invite a thousand people, but if you cannot take care of them, it will be an offence. These are Mahaprabhu's words.
