'Sri Guru-charana-padma'

By Srila Narottam Das Thakur

sri-guru-charana-padma, kevala bhakati-sadma,
vando muni savadhana mate
yanhara prasade bhai, e bhava tariya yai,
krsna-prapti haya yanha haite [1]

sri-guru-charana – feet of Sri Guru; padma – lotus; kevala – exclusive; bhakati-sadma – residence, abode of devotion; vando – bow, pray; muni – I; savadhana mate – in a careful, cautious way; yanhara prasade – by whose mercy; bhai – brother; e bhava – this material world; tariya yai – can be crossed; krsna-prapti haya – Krishna can be attained; yanha haite – through whom.

[1] I carefully offer my obeisance at Sri Guru's lotus feet, which are an abode of exclusive devotion, by whose mercy, brother, we can cross this world, and through whom we can come to Krishna.

guru-mukha-padma-vakya, chitete kariya aikya,
ara na kariha mane asa
sri-guru-charane rati, sei se uttama-gati,
ye prasade pure sarva asa [2]

guru-mukha-padma – lotus mouth of the guru; vakya – words, instruction; chitete – in your heart, soul; kariya aikya – make united, concordant; ara – and; na kariha mane – do not think, feel; asa – wish, hope; sri-guru-charane – to the holy feet of Sri Guru; rati – attachment, love; sei – this; se uttama-gati – the highest practice, way; ye prasade – by whose mercy; pure – fulfilled; sarva – all; asa – hopes, aspirations.

[2] Make the teachings coming from Sri Guru's lotus mouth one with your heart and do not keep any desires. Attachment to Sri Guru's holy feet is the highest path: all aspirations are fulfilled by his mercy.

chaksu-dana dila yei, janme janme prabhu sei,
divya jnana hrde prakasita
prema-bhakti yanha haite, avidya vinasa yate
vede gaya yanhara charita [3]

chaksu-dana – the gift of eyes; dila yei – who gave; janme janme – birth after birth; prabhu – master, lord; sei – he; divya – divine; jnana – knowledge; hrde – in the heart; prakasita – reveal; prema-bhakti – transcendental loving devotion; yanha haite – through whom; avidya – ignorance; vinasa – destroyed; yate – by which; vede – in the Vedas; gaya – sung; yanhara – whose; charita – character, nature.

[3] He who has given me eyes and reveals divine knowledge in my heart is my Master birth after birth. The Vedas extol him as being capable of giving transcendental loving devotion and destroying ignorance.

sri-guru karuna-sindhu, adhama janara bandhu,
lokanatha lokera jivana
ha ha prabhu kara daya, deha more pada-chhaya,
e adhama laila sarana [4]

sri-guru – Sri Guru; karuna-sindhu – an ocean of mercy; adhama janara – of lowest, despicable people; bandhu – friend; loka-natha – master of the world; lokera jivana – the life of all that be; ha ha prabhu – O Master!; kara daya – please (be compassionate); deha – give; more – me; pada-chhaya – shade of [your] feet; e adhama – this wretch; laila sarana – surrendered, taken shelter.

[4] Sri Guru is an ocean of mercy and a friend of the worst lot. He is the master of the whole world and the very life of all that be. O Master! Please give me the shade of your feet. This wretch has surrendered to you.

Knock, Knock! (Ahvana Poem)
'Who is your friend? Your friend has come to your house as a beggar and prays to you, 'Please chant the Name of Krishna! Come with us!' Just like a beggar he comes to you, but you cannot recognise him.'

When we see somebody wearing saffron colour, we think they are a maha-bhagavat,
but it is not so. We cannot recognise with these mundane eyes who is a sadhu.
