When Mahaprabhu lived in Nabadwip, Mayapur, He used to travel and preach this Krishna consciousness everywhere—He went to Puri, sometimes He went to Vrindavan and South India, one time He even went to Bangladesh.

Before Mahaprabhu came, Bhagavatam said (11.5.32), "Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasa (যজ্ঞৈঃ সঙ্কীর্ত্তনপ্রায়ৈর্যজন্তি হি সুমেধসঃ)": in this world people can be saved by the Holy Name. Mahaprabhu's Nama, guna, lila, parikar, vaisistya (নাম, গুণ, লীলা, পরিকর, বৈশিষ্ট্য: Name, qualities, pastimes, associates and features) are the same as Mahaprabhu Himself. Mahaprabhu and His Holy Name are nondifferent from each other.

Mahaprabhu came here for two reasons, one is external and one is internal. His external duty was like this: He came here and He had to give something. What did He give? He distributed Harinam maha-mantra to everybody in this Kali-yuga. His internal duty was like this: all gopis, all servitors serve Krishna, and seeing their mood and the mood of Srimati Radharani, Krishna wondered, "What kind of taste is Radharani getting? What kind of taste is She relishing? I want to taste it!" So, Mahaprabhu came to relish that kind of taste.

Mahaprabhu distributed this Holy Name, saying,

হরের্নাম হরের্নাম হরের্নামৈব কেবলম্ ।
কলৌ নাস্ত্যেব নাস্ত্যেব নাস্ত্যেব গতিরন্যথা ॥

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

"Only chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name—there is no other way, no other way, no other way."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, 7.76)

In this age of Kali-yuga, the only religion is the Holy Name; otherwise besides this Holy Name "kali kale nahi ara dharma (কলি কালে নাহি অর ধর্ম্ম)"—there is no other religion. The Lord says, "You cannot do without the Holy Name—without the Holy Name, you cannot get Me; without the Holy Name, you cannot get your real home and address." This Holy Name (Harinam, Hare Krishna maha-mantra) is the main religion, and through this Holy Name you can reach your goal.

Also, Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur said in Chaitanya-bhagavat (referring to Mahaprabhu's words) that in this Kali-yuga ladies (mahila) and the lower caste (sudra) will get Mahaprabhu's mercy first, and we can see now that this Krishna consciousness is developing more in the Western countries, not so much in India.
