Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya: His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
You have heard about many pastimes of Mahaprabhu from Chaitanya-bhagavat and Chaitanya-charitamrita. He performed many types of pastimes, but you know that Sarvabhauma Pandit at first did not believe that Mahaprabhu was the Lord Himself. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya had a brother-in-law, Gopinath Acharya, who told him that Mahaprabhu was the Lord, but Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya said, "How can I believe that this boy is the Lord? And He is only twenty-four years old, how will he keep His sannyas?" In the end, Mahaprabhu showed Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya His sat-bhuja-murti (six-handed form)... One day, Mahaprabhu was walking from Nabadwip to Puri. He had given His danda to Nityananda Prabhu, but Nityananda Prabhu broke it. When they were not far from Puri, Mahaprabhu asked Him, "Where is My danda?" "When You were chanting, Your danda fell down and You fell on it, so it broke," lied Nityananda Prabhu. But Mahaprabhu could understand what He had done and showed His anger, "I have left everything, and this danda was My only wealth—I have brought only one danda with Me, but You have broken it! I will not go with You! Either You go first or I will go first." "Prabhu, You go first, we will come after You," answered Nityananda Prabhu, and Mahaprabhu went to Puri first. When He ran into the temple of Jagannath, He did not see Jagannath—He saw Lord Krishna and Radharani instead, and seeing Their form, He fell unconscious. Then, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya came there and saw a sadhu lying in the temple senseless. He noticed that the sadhu looked very unusual—He was very tall and healthy, He did not look like a man. Anyhow, he took Mahaprabhu to his house. Later, when Mahaprabhu returned to His senses and was talking with Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya asked Him (Mahaprabhu was a young sannyasi, He was only twenty-four, and Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya was an old man at that time), "Have you read Vedanta?" "No, I have not read any Vedanta," answered Mahaprabhu. Then, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya started reading Vedanta to Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu listened to Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya quietly. Seven days later, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya asked Him, "You have been listening to my reading of Vedanta for seven days, but You are not saying anything, You are not asking me any questions. What is wrong? Can you not understand why I am teaching You?" "When you are reading Vedanta, I can understand it, but when you are explaining it I cannot understand anything. If you give Me permission, I can try to explain something." When Mahaprabhu began to explain Vedanta, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya's eyes bulged. He was astonished, "Such a young boy is giving such explanation! What He is explaining is right..." In the end, Mahaprabhu showed him His form (showed him who He was), and Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya surrendered, "Please give me shelter at Your lotus feet!"
