Trying Times

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Nabadwip Dham
27 November 2010

You know that before Mahaprabhu came it was a very difficult time, and now also a very difficult time is coming.

That time was very difficult. Patasaha Hussain Sah was the emperor of Bengal, and in Nabadwip also there was Chand Kazi (his actual name was Maulana Sirajuddin). So many different things were happening at that time. In Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's time also, it was very difficult to preach in Nabadwip and Bengal area, and this situation is coming soon too. Preaching Krishna consciousness is becoming very difficult, but anyhow we must preach. It is very difficult to preach in Bengal, but if we can preach somewhere outside Bengal, it will be good.

I was reading yesterday about Mahaprabhu's time and how difficult it was to preach at that time. It is not written in Chaitanya-charitamrita—Prabhupad Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur wrote something about it and Kunja Babu (Bhakti Vilas Tirtha Maharaj) published it. I was surprised to read how difficult the situation was at that time. It is unbearable. We cannot even imagine these things.

How much Mahaprabhu was suffering at that time! They used to stop kirtan or any religion everywhere, they thought religion meant a little bit of fire sacrifice or something. They did not follow anything at that time. But Mahaprabhu spread sankirtan movement—He would take people and together with them did so much sankirtan. And it was very difficult at that time—there were no cars, nothing. It is a miracle how He did it.

Mahaprabhu preached like this only up to twenty-four years old, after that He left Nabadwip. Before, there were only two-three persons, but after Mahaprabhu started sankirtan movement so many devotees came together. They used to be scattered all over India, but when Mahaprabhu came, He was like a pillar and they all got energy and strength from Him.

Sri Guru: Medium and Shelter
'Do you know why you take initiation? Many scriptures describe the Guru in many ways. There are different kinds of activities and different kinds of expressions, just as there are different kinds of devotees and different kinds of expressions.'

'If the Ganges touches someone, he is later purified, but you purify souls simply by seeing them—such is your power.'

Why do we eat? Why is it necessary to eat? Because you are hungry? No. It is necessary to eat for service—for service you need to put something into your stomach, not for hunger.
