Half-Hen Logic

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
2 July 2013, Sri Nabadwip Dham, part 3

Question: Could you tell something about ardha-kukkuti nyaya ("half-hen logic")? What should we learn from that pastime?

Ardha-kukkuti nyaya is about not having faith. A man came to do puja of Mahaprabhu to the house of Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami's brother, and when Minaketan Ramdas, a devotee of Nityananda Prabhu, came there, they had no faith in him. They love Mahaprabhu, they have love and affection, faith for Mahaprabhu because Mahaprabhu had told everybody to tell,

হরের্নাম হরের্নাম হরের্নামৈব কেবলম্ ।
কলৌ নাস্ত্যেব নাস্ত্যেব নাস্ত্যেব গতিরন্যথা ॥

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

"Only chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name—there is no other way, no other way, no other way."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, 7.76)

Mahaprabhu had told everybody to preach the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, to chant the Holy Name, but what did Nityananda Prabhu chant?

ভজ গৌরাঙ্গ, কহ গৌরাঙ্গ, লহ গৌরাঙ্গের নাম রে
যে জন গৌরাঙ্গ ভজে, সেই আমার প্রাণ রে

bhaja gauranga, kaha gauranga, laha gaurangera nama re
ye jana gauranga bhaje, sei amara prana re

"Worship Gauranga! Say Gauranga! Take Gauranga's Name! Those who worship Gauranga are My heart and soul!"

Nityananda Prabhu did not chant, "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna"—He chanted, "Bhaja Gauranga, kaha Gauranga, laha Gaurangera nama re. Ye jana Gauranga bhaje, sei amara prana re. Worship Gauranga! Say Gauranga! Take Gauranga's Name! Those who worship Gauranga are My heart and soul!"

So, there was some programme in that house of Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami's brother, but they did not give respect to Nityananda Prabhu, they only gave respect to Mahaprabhu.

Nityananda Prabhu is an avadhut—sometimes He changes the colour of His clothes, sometimes He goes house to house; some people could not recognise Him.

Balaram's avatar serves Krishna with ten hands—pillow, conch, chamara fan, peacock fan, etc. And even more than that—Balaram always protects Krishna. Only when Kaliya-daman lila happened, Krishna went there alone, and there was some problem. Balaram was not there at that time. Balaram always protects Krishna, and here also Nityananda Prabhu is asraya-vigraha. Krishna's Name, beauty and pastimes are non-different from Krishna. Although Mahaprabhu told to preach Krishna's Name, Nityananda Prabhu did not do wrong—He preached that Krishna is non-different from His Holy Name, beauty and pastimes. So, what He did was correct—He preached, "Say Gauranga, Take Gauranga's Name. Gauranga is also a very nice Name! Take the Name of Gauranga!" But they did not give respect to Nityananda Prabhu...

Gurudev also said that if you pay obeisance to the Lord and not pay obeisance to the Lord's servant, the Lord will not take that obeisance. That is why when we do puja, we first do Guru-puja. And Nityananda Prabhu is non-different from Guru—He is asraya-vigraha. If you do not take shelter of asraya-vigraha, you cannot go to take shelter of visaya-vigraha (Mahaprabhu is the visaya-vigraha)—He will not accept you.

Nityananda Prabhu told Raghunath Das Goswami also, "Ai chora, ai!" What does 'chora' mean? A thief. He said, "Come, thief, come! I will give you punishment! You must feed everybody, all Vaishnavs, today, then your offence will be removed. You have done wrong. Without My consent, without My instruction, you wanted to go and secretly meet with Mahaprabhu in Shantipur. That is why you are a thief. You went to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu without My knowing, without knowing Me first, that is why Mahaprabhu did not accept you so many times. Now I am giving you your punishment!" Punishment means mercy, and when Raghunath Das Goswami got that mercy, he said, "I am paying obeisance to You, please put Your feet on my head. Please give me some mercy—only you can take me out of this illusory environment, only You can rescue me." Then Nityananda Prabhu said, "Now you can go and meet with Mahaprabhu." Finally, he got that mercy.

Here also, Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami got Nityananda Prabhu's mercy. Nityananda Prabhu told him, "You must not associate with them!" Giving respect to one and not giving respect to the other is ardha-kukkuti nyaya (half-hen logic). It means when you cut a chicken, only side gets mercy and not to the other one.

Gurudev gave also gave another example. There is a kind of a bird (I forgot its name in English) that goes to a jungle and closes its eyes thinking, "Now nobody can see me!" It closes its eyes and thinks nobody can see it now, but only it closes its eyes, and everybody can see. So, if you have ardha-kukkuti nyaya [half-hen logic] it means you will not get mercy, you will be like that bird. It happens in life. If you go to the visaya-vigraha and do not give respect to the asraya-vigraha, you will not get mercy. This is ardha-kukkuti nyaya.

Dedication to Service
'By the mercy of Gurudev we are given a tongue to chant the Holy Name, to chant the glories of the Guru and Vaishnavs, but if we criticise others and tell bad things about others, what is then the difference between the mouth and the other gates?'

Parama karuna
'Give up mundane talk and chant aloud 'Gaurahari'! Give up village talk and chant aloud 'Gaurahari'!'
পরম করুণ

Those who are surrendered souls always follow their guru. They do not think what's right, what's wrong, what is correct or not correct. What their Guru told them to do, they do that.
