Simple, Sweet and Pure

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
2 July 2013, Sri Nabadwip Dham, part 5

Question: You were mentioning distributing simple, sweet and good things, not external things. Could you elaborate on that?

Yes. I tell simple things. Pure things means not imitation. We must not imitate devotees. Gurudev said, "Sadhu haowa, sadhu saja na (সাধু হাওয়া, সাধু সাজা না)—you must be a sadhu, not pretend to be a sadhu." It means only wearing a sadhu's dress outside and having other material desires inside. All that glitters in not gold. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur told many examples about this. Just as externally, Harinam and Nama-aparadh look the same, a real sadhu and a pretending sadhu also look the same, but internally they are not.

We do not want to show so many things to others externally. Showing one thing externally and doing something else internally is not right. A sadhu must always give to others, not take from others; he may take for himself only what is necessary to maintain his life. We can show so much opulence, but how many percent devotional activities is there in it? Sieve it and you can measure how much purity is there.

If you look through a coloured glass, you cannot see things in their real colour. If you wear coloured spectacles, you will see everything in a different colour—if you put on blue glasses, you will see everything is blue; if you wear black glasses, you can see black everywhere. You must wear real glasses, then you can see how many percent of devotional activities is there inside something.

We can easily pretend, put on a show or a drama and we can easily convert people within a few minutes, but how will you be finally able to rescue them from the illusory environment, to take them to the main world, to the main destination? It is very difficult. You can easily convert people for a few days or a few years, but it is very difficult to actually take them from the illusory environment and take them to their destination. You can convert people through your pretending, through your drama or acting, but finally you will not be successful.

Our Srila Sridhar Maharaj's conception is pure and sweet, and you can easily accept it. Actually, we cannot accept it easily because we have a disease—we cannot digest pure things easily. For example, if you have a stomach problem (if your stomach is weak) or you have a liver problem and you take pure ghee, then you will have even more problems with your stomach. So, you must be without offence, you must be pure and clean. Make yourself pure through sravan and kirtan, through practising, then you will be able to accept these what is called simple things—you will be able to digest these small, sweet things easily and you can go to your destination.

Weaknesses
'If in this life you think, 'This is my house, I will not leave this house,' then next birth you will become a lizard. Attachment is a very dangerous thing. The kind of attachment you have for your family life should come for your Guru, the Vaishnavs, and Bhagavan.'

You must always remember and keep in your heart that we get honour, respect,
name, and fame, but how do we get it? Actually, it belongs to our Guru.
