Holy Places for Holy Deeds His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Now is Kali-yuga, and the time is coming when the Ganges will disappear... As long as there are the glories of the Lord in the world, there will be Ganga, there will be Yamuna, there will be Govardhan. Every day the Govardhan Hill is becoming smaller by the size of one mustard seed, and one day it will disappear, Ganga will disappear... Ganga did not want to come at first, she said, "The sinners, the offenders will go and bathe in me, and I will be full of all kinds of sins! I will not go!" But Bhagirath Maharaj said, "When a Vaishnav bathes in you, you will be pure." People are doing Durga puja now.. Vraja-gopis also did Durga puja, but did they do it for? They wanted to get Krishna as their husband in a future life—they did Durga puja for Krishna; but people do Durga puja, offering meat, etc. and asking, "Give me wealth, give me knowledge, give me body, give me a beautiful wife." Mahaprabhu, on the other hand, said, "I do not want wealth, I do not want knowledge, nor do I want beautiful girls." So, as Narottam Das Thakur wrote,
ঐছন আমার মন ফিরে যেন অন্ধজন
aichhana amara mana phire yena andha jana My mind wanders like a blind man who does not know the right way from the wrong way. 'Thakura Vaishnava-gana' by Srila Narottam Das Thakur Think what it means. ...I remember there was a pujari in Govardhan: every day he did puja at two temples, and one evening, after he offered the bhog and took prasadam, I suddenly saw him going out of the Math. It was late night already, and I asked him, "Where are you going, baba?" He told me, "For the whole month, I am doing parikrama of Govardhan..." He did a full twenty-eight-mile parikrama at 10 pm! And in the morning he would do mangal arati, puja, everything. Now he has become an old man... We do only half parikrama at a time. We sit in several places, in the Annyor village, at Govinda Kunda, Haldi Kunda, and so on, and then go back to the temple. This is how we do parikrama. Those who live there do a full parikrama every day for the whole month, and some do it twice a day, fifty-six miles total, walking bare feet. After Gurudev made a temple there, we too can now do the parikrama of Govardhan. You cannot do Vridanvan parikrama every day, but it is said that if every day you do Tulasi parikrama, the same result will come as when you do the parikrama of Vrindavan...
