When you do service, you should chant the Holy Name. Actually, the Holy Name comes to the mouth of those who do service, so if the Holy Name does not come to your mouth, it means that you are an offender of the Holy Name. If you chant the Holy Name, nonsense talks and gossips will not come to your mouth. The Holy Name does not come to the mouth of those who spend their time talking nonsense—if somebody gossips and chants the Holy Name, this is not the Holy Name...

তৃণাধিক হীন দীন অকিঞ্চন ছার ।
আপনে মানবি সদা ছাড়ি অহঙ্কার ॥
বৃক্ষসম ক্ষমাগুণ করবি সাধন ।
প্রতিহিংসা ত্যজি অন্যে করবি পালন ॥

trnadhika hina, dina, akinchana chhara
apane manabi sada chhadi' ahankara
vrksa-sama ksama-guna karabi sadhana
pratihimsa tyaji' anye karabi palana

"Give up your false ego, and always consider yourself lower than grass, poor, needy, and mean. Practise tolerance like a tree. Practise tolerance like a tree. Stop ill-treating others and nurture them instead."

"If somebody does something bad to me, I will not do bad to them." "Pratihimsa tyaji' anye karabi palana: stop ill-treating others and nurture them instead."

We must become free from all other desires and chant the Holy Name, but if you have desire for bhukti, mukti, siddhi (enjoyment, liberation or powers), the Holy Name will not come to you and you will not be able to serve the Lord. Do you understand?

"বৃহৎ টা স্বার্থ পাইতে হইলে, ক্ষুদ্র স্বার্থ ত্যাগ করতে হবে, brihat ta svartha paite haile, ksudra svartha tyaga korte habe: if you want to get great things, you must avoid small matters." Money, food, clothes, fickle mind, etc. are all small things. You have some sukriti and one day you can do some service, but if you lose it, your service to the Lord will also go away...

Accept what is favourable to devotion and reject what is not favourable. Srila Sridhar Maharaj said that if you do both what is favourable and what is unfavourable, it will not work (the two do not go together). Sravan, kirtan, lectures is what is favourable, and if something is an obstacle, you must become detached from it. If you chant the Holy Name ("Krishna, Krishna") and make Vaishnava aparadh (have no faith in the Guru and Vaishnavs), it will not work. These two do not go together.

You chant the Holy Name and you must believe that the Lord will protect you, the Lord will maintain you. We sing in the kirtan,

দৈন্য, আত্মনিবেদন, গোপ্তৃত্বে বরণ ॥
'অবশ্য রক্ষিবে কৃষ্ণ'—বিশ্বাস পালন ॥

dainya, atma-nivedana, goptrtve varana
'avasya raksibe krsna'—visvasa palana

"Humility, self-submission, embracing the Lord’s guardianship, maintaining the faith that 'Krishna will certainly protect me'."

The Lord will protect, the Lord will maintain. Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur also tells,

ভক্তি-অনুকূল মাত্র কার্য্যের স্বীকার ।
ভক্তি-প্রতিকূল ভাব—বর্জ্জনাঙ্গীকার ॥

bhakti-anukula matra karyera svikara
bhakti-pratikula bhava—varjanangikara

"We will accept what is favourable to devotion and we will reject what is unfavourable to devotion." If we do what is favourable to devotion and do not reject what is unfavourable to devotion, it will not work. It is necessary to understand and follow this. Gramya-katha, prajalpa, niyamagraha, laulyancha, jana-sangancha (gossiping, talking nonsense, superficial attachment to rules and regulations, greed, associating with nondevotees). We must always avoid what is unfavourable to devotion, always avoid it—it is very bad, very harmful for our spiritual life. You have heard the stories of Ramachandra Puri and the brother of Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami that show it. Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami wrote Chaitanya-charitamrita, but he did not mention the name of his own brother anywhere...
