(3) OUR PRACTISING LIFE PRINCIPLES

Patience, tolerance is necessary—this is the main thing. Gurudev would always write, "Sahasa vidadhita na kriyam (সহসা বিদধীত ন ক্রিয়াম্): suddenly not to do anything"—wait and see, everything will become peaceful. Krishna always tests us, but we cannot tolerate so much, we do not have so much patience. That is why we think we took initiation so many years ago but we are not getting anything.

ভুক্তি-মুক্তি আদি-বাঞ্ছা যদি মনে হয় ।
সাধন করিলেও প্রেম উৎপন্ন না হয় ॥

bhukti-mukti adi-vancha yadi mane haya
sadhana karile prema utpanna na haya

"If you have material desires, if you want liberation, enjoyment, some mystic powers, and so on, then even if you practise all life, or life after life, prema, divine love, will not come."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 19.175)

We have so many material desires coming to our heart, that is why we practise but do not get pleasure. Suppose you are going to work and your son wants to go with you. He cries so much that he wants to go with you, but what do you do? You give him a chocolate, you give him a toy, and your son forgets about going with you.

Think about it, what do you want? Krishna has already given us so much—Krishna gave you children, Krishna gave you a husband, Krishna gave you a father, Krishna gave you a mother—but still we are asking for more and more.

There are six types of bad elements: atyahara, prayasa, prajalpa, niyamagraha, laulya, janasanga (অত্যাহার, প্রয়াস, প্রজল্প, নিয়মাগ্রহ, লৌল্য, জনসঙ্গ—too much eating, doing nonsense, too much gossiping, superficial attachment to rules and regulations, greed, associating with nondevotees). We do not accept what is in favour of devotion properly—sometimes we accept what is favourable but sometimes we also accept what is unfavourable to devotion. This is bad and this is a big problem. We accept what is favourable to devotion, but we must also reject what is unfavourable. Prabhupad Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur told that it is like you drink milk and sometimes you also take tobacco, smoke—it does not work that way, the two are opposite of each other. Drinking milk means you will get some health, some improvement, but by smocking you will reduce your health. You must accept what is favourable to devotion and at the same time also reject what is unfavourable. This is the main thing.

Sometimes some material things come to your heart, but you must remove them from your heart. You can see the example of Madhavendra Puri—he wanted to taste some ksir, but then he thought, "My tongue is very greedy (jihvara lalasa), I will not stay here!"

জিহ্বার লালসে যেই ইতি-উতি ধায় ।
শিশ্নোদরপরায়ণ সে কৃষ্ণ নাহি পায় ॥

jihvara lalase yei iti-uti dhaya
sisnodara-parayana se krsna nahi paya

"Those who go here and there trying to satisfy their tongue, follow their genitals and belly and cannot attain Krishna."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.227)

Sometimes we have to tolerate some things. Ramachandra Puri made an offence to Madhavendra Puri and even to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu—many times he made some comments against Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, but Mahaprabhu gave him respect. There was also Brahmananda Bharati who used to wear a tiger's skin. He was from Keshav Bharati's group (Mahaprabhu also took sannyas from Keshav Bharati), and once devotees told Mahaprabhu, "Brahmananda Bharati has come! Brahmananda Bharati has come!" Brahmananda Bharati was sitting right in front of Mahaprabhu, but Mahaprabhu said, "Where? There is no Brahmananda Bharati here!" The devotees pointed at him, "O Prabhu, he is Brahmananda Bharati," but Mahaprabhu replied, "No, it cannot be Brahmananda Bharati—he cannot be wearing a tiger's skin!" Then Brahmananda Bharati got shy and changed his clothes.

So, we can see that actually some chastity is necessary.

What to Give and What to Take
'Your wife is a servant of the Lord and if you take her prasad, then you will not have the ego of a master. You always take, but you must not take, you must give.. What can you give? You may have nothing, but you have sweet words, you have a heart.'

Jaya jaya gurudever
'There is no one like you to preach pure devotion. You are a spotless moon like merciful Nityananda.'

All paraphernalia, even the temple itself, is Nityananda Prabhu, the Lord Himself.
