Why Can We Not Get It? His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
At Srivas Pandit's house there was a maidservant Duhkhi—she got Mahaprabhu's mercy. There was a Muslim tailor near Srivas Pandit's house—he too got Mahaprabhu's mercy. A great sinner Chand Kazi broke a mridanga, but even he got Mahaprabhu's mercy. Why can we not get it? We must want it. There must be some effort on our side. If you make one step to the Lord, the Lord will make ten steps to you. It is necessary to have an intense desire, hankering, necessary to make an effort, then you will get mercy. Do you understand it? If you do not try, if you do not make an effort, how will mercy come? You must open your heart! When you open your heart, then the Lord will come and sit in your heart, and if you keep your heart closed, where will the Lord sit? You must open your heart and soul. Surrender yourself with heart and soul, become surrendered (saranagata),
দৈন্য, আত্মনিবেদন, গোপ্তৃত্বে বরণ ॥
dainya, atma-nivedana, goptrtve varana Humility, self-submission, embracing the Lord’s guardianship, maintaining the faith that 'Krishna will certainly protect me'. It is necessary to have faith.
'শ্রদ্ধা' শব্দে—বিস্বাস কহে সুদৃঢ় নিশ্চয় ।
'sraddha'-sabde—visvasa kahe sudrdha nischaya "Sraddha is firm, determined faith that by service to Krishna all actions are accomplished." (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 22.62) You must keep faith that the Lord takes care, that the Lord protects. If Krishna protects you, nobody can kill you, and if Krishna wants you to die, nobody can save you. If even a very sinful person surrenders to the lotus feet of Krishna, ("Api chet suduracharo..." B.g., 9.30), the Lord forgives all their offences and engages them in His service. This is how merciful the Lord is, and there is no parallel to the mercy of Nityananda and Mahaprabhu—even when They are beaten They distribute divine love! It is written also about Srila Prabhupad,
কুলিয়াতে পাষণ্ডীরা অত্যাচার কৈল যা'রা
kuliyate pasandira atyachara kaila ya'ra "You forgave all the atheists of Kuliya village, despite their bad behaviour. Loudly you proclaimed to one and all: one who is more tolerant than a tree can always chant the glories of Lord Hari." How tolerant and humble one should be? It is necessary to be as humble as a blade of grass, trnad api sunichena. It is necessary to learn this.
তৃণাদপি সুনীচেন তরোরিব সহিষ্ণুনা ।
trnad api sunichena taror api sahisnuna "One who is humbler than a blade of grass, more forbearing than a tree, who gives honour to others without desiring it for himself, is qualified to always chant the Holy Name of Krishna." (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.239) Be humbler than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, and give honour to others. It is necessary to understand and learn this! And these qualities must come within you, must come from your heart. We must give obeisance to all devotees, always say, "Hare Krishna" when you call others, etc. Such process and practice must come. We must try to change. People say, "When others give class, I will not listen," "I will not listen to another disciple," "He is his disciple," "He is his guru," etc. Such mentality is not good.
