Mercy of Guru

You must do the service that Gurudev gives you properly. If you want to go to Gurudev, if you want to go to the highest place and get service from your Gurudev, then it is not necessary to be a Guru, not necessary to be an acharya of a temple, not necessary to be a secretary of a temple, not necessary to be a manager of a temple—if you only do some simple service, that is sufficient for you all. It is not necessary to be a big speaker or a big singer (kirtaniya), not necessary to be anything. It is sufficient to be just a small servitor. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, Mahaprabhu, Bhaktivinod Thakur also told this. That is what is necessary. We must understand all this and understand that you cannot get a good result in your spiritual life without the mercy of the Guru. That is why I am telling everybody: be careful with this.

In his last moment, Gurudev also said that wherever you live, whether you are staying in a forest or a jungle—you can be in a car, on a bus, in a big house or a thatched house—it is not a problem: you must maintain your spiritual life properly. That is the main thing.

That is the main thing. Without the mercy of the Guru, without the instruction of the Guru, you cannot cross, you cannot overcome the illusory environment. We must understand clearly what is the mercy of the Guru.

We sing, "Guru-mukha-padma-vakya, chittete kariya aikya (গুরুমুখ-পদ্মবাক্য চিত্তেতে করিয়া ঐক্য): make the teachings from Sri Guru's lotus mouth one with your heart." If you think like that, somebody can say it is being fanatic, but we must follow this line. One time, Gurudev was sitting at his veranda in Nabadwip, and some brahmachari was singing downstairs, "Karuna na ha-ile kandiya kandiya prana na rakhiba ara (করুণা না হৈলে কাঁদিয়া কাঁদিয়া প্রাণ না রাখিব আর): Gurudev, without your mercy we will cry and leave our body." Gurudev said (I was there at his veranda at that time), "You see? They are singing it, but they are all telling lies." Gurudev laughed, and I laughed too. We sing, "Guru-mukha-padma-vakya, chittete kariya aikya," but how many per cent of us follow this? That is my question. That is why I am praying to everybody: you must follow what Gurudev tells us, you must follow the instruction that Gurudev gives you. That is the main thing in your spiritual life.
