By the mercy of Gurudev, by the mercy of the Guru and Vaishnavs, I am here today at Sri Chaitanya Saraswata Krishnanusilana Sangha, Dum Dum Park. I would like to speak about the Guru-tattva.

The scriptures also talk about the mercy of Gurudev: without the mercy of the Guru and Vaishnav, we cannot conquer, overcome, or fight Maya. That is why we must first get the mercy of the Guru and Vaishnavs.

Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj wrote a book Sri Guru and His Grace, and our Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math Krishnanusilana Sangha logo also shows this conception. When a lotus flower blooms in a pond, there can be so much light and heat, but the sun cannot burn, cannot destroy the lotus flower because it is in the water and soil of the pond. However, as soon as we remove that lotus plant from the pond—from the water and the soil—the sun can immediately burn and dry it.

In this example, the lotus is like a jiva soul, ourselves; the soil and water is the Guru; and the sun is compared to the Lord. For as long as the lotus is in the shelter of the water and soil, the sun cannot do anything to it, but as soon as the lotus is taken out of the soil and water, the sun can easily burn it. It means that if we take shelter of the Guru, if we live according to our Guru's guidance, then even Krishna cannot do anything to us because we are under the guidance of our Gurudev. If, however, we live without Gurudev's mercy, we can fall down at any time, as it happened to Eklavya, who did not follow his Gurudev's instruction because he wanted to become more expert than his Guru—in the end, he was destroyed. It is necessary to practise under the guidance of Gurudev.
