(2/7) Transcending Bodily Existence His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Through good association, we can clean our hearts, we can make our land fertile, and then, coming to a proper, bona fide guru, you can receive the seed of the creeper of devotion (bhakti-lata-bij). The problem is that when you take this bhakti-lata-bij (if you take initiation), you do not practise properly. If you plant a tree but do not water it, the seed will dry. In the same way, if you take the seed of devotion but do not water it through proper practice, it will dry, too.
ব্রহ্মাণ্ড ভ্রমিতে কোন ভাগ্যবান্ জীব ।
brahmanda bhramite kona bhagyavan jiva 'Having travelled throughout the universe, some fortunate souls receive the seed of the devotional creeper by the mercy of Sri Guru, who is non-different from Krishna. Becoming gardeners, they plant that seed and nurture it with the water of hearing and chanting.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.19.151–152) Sravan (hearing about the Lord) and kirtan (chanting the Lord's Name and practising Krishna consciousness) are main. Fortunate souls are those who can receive the seed of the Holy Name from a bona fide guru. What are you doing? Those who have not taken initiation, who have not come to Krishna consciousness and have not got proper guidance must understand this. We are living in this world, but we are killing millions and billions of living entities (jiva souls) every single day to stay alive! When you are walking, driving or even breathing or drinking water, you also kill so many living entities. How many wheat or rice plants do you cut when you take a roti or some rice? Even if you are a vegetarian, you are killing so many jiva souls. Non-vegetarian people who kill jiva souls (chicken, goats, cows, and so on) commit a sin, but you are also doing that. How can you overcome and get relief from this kind of situation? Srimad Bhagavatam and Srimad Bhagavad-gita give an exact solution to this problem.
পৃথিবীতে যত কথা ধর্ম্মনামে-চলে ।
prthivite yaha kichu dharma name chale 'Bhagavatam says that whatever is going on in this world in the name of religion is complete cheating.' (Based on Srimad Bhagavatam, 1.1.2) We do not preach Hinduism, Islam or Christianity. We are preaching jaiva-dharma, the religion of the soul. We are preaching about what is your duty and what for you have come to this world. This is the religion of all jiva souls. My parents have given me this body. When I was a goat, I also had parents; when I was a cow, I also had parents; when I was a cat, a dog or a snake, I also had parents at that time. Now I have got a human body, and as before some parents have given me this body, but all these parents do not give me that which I am. My father or mother cannot give me my atma. And it is the religion of atma, the soul, that we come to tell others about. Rice, dal, vegetables are food of the body, but that is not food for the jiva soul. What is the religion, or the function, of the soul? The soul (atma) always wants to serve the Supersoul (Paramatma); in other words, the soul always wants to serve the Lord. Who is the Lord? Brahma told in his Brahma-samhita:
ঈশ্বরঃ পরমঃ কৃষ্ণঃ সচ্চিদানন্দবিগ্রহঃ ।
isvarah paramah krsnah sach-chid-ananda-vigrahah 'Krishna, who is known as Govinda, is the supreme controller. He has an eternal, blissful, spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin, for He is the prime cause of all causes.' (Sri Brahma-samhita, 5.1) Sometimes, the Lord is known as Yadav, sometimes as Madhav, sometimes as Gopal. The Lord has many Names in this world. The soul always wants to serve the Supersoul, but it cannot do that because the soul is covered by the illusory environment, Maya. What is Maya? Krishna says, 'I have created Maya.'
দৈবী হ্যেষা গুণময়ী মম মায়া দুরত্যয়া ।
daivi hy esa gunamayi, mama maya duratyaya 'My supramundane trimodal illusory potency (alluring those who are averse to Me) is extremely difficult to overcome. However, this insurmountable potency of Mine can be overcome by those who exclusively surrender to Me.' (Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 7.14) Krishna told, 'I have created Maya, I have given her power.' Because Maya gets her power from Krishna, she is very powerful. At the same time, when a jiva soul surrenders to Krishna and Maya Devi sees, 'This jiva soul is surrendered to my Lord, to my Master,' she runs away from that soul.
