(6/10) Deadly Dearth

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Hooghly District, preaching programme,
23 February 2019, evening, part 6
Translated from Bengali

Every year, before Sri Nabadwip Dham parikrama, we come to you, going house to house, as part of our Dham Pracharani Sobha to invite people for Sri Nabadwip Dham parikrama so that you can come and hear about the holy dham, so that you can get mercy of sadhus, gurus and Vaishnavs. Please come and do this parikrama in the association of devotees – you will get great benefit.

You must search for reality. Wake up, wake up, brother! You have no time. You think, 'I will take to spiritual life in my old age,' but how long do you think you are going to be alive? There is no guarantee that you will not leave tomorrow itself. We can leave this world at any moment. When the call comes, then no doctor, no wife, no son, no daughter, no mother, no father will be able to stop it and keep you in this world. We all have to leave one day. But we have not done that which we have come for. This is the source of our eternal sadness.

হরি হরি ! বিফলে জনম গোঙাইনু ।
মনুষ্যজনম পাইয়া রাধাকৃষ্ণ না ভজিয়া
জানিয়া শুনিয়া বিষ খাইনু ॥

hari hari! viphale janama gonainu
manusya-janama paiya radha-krsna na bhajiya
janiya suniya visa khainu

'O Lord! My life has passed in vain. I have got a human birth but have not served Radha-Krishna. I have been consciously drinking poison (I knew it, I heard about it from others, but I still drank it).'

(Srila Narottam Das Thakur)

I consciously took poison! I knew it was poison, I heard that it was poison, but I still took it. I have not worshipped Sri Radha-Krishna! O Lord! What have I done?

You must always think about the Lord and about spiritual life in service to the Lord. Sadhus go house to house searching for the Lord's servants. Gurudev has made such nice arrangements for you all, but the only problem is that we cannot practise Krishna consciousness. In this world, people complain about shortage of food, shortage of money, but we do not say such things – we say that the only shortage in this world is shortage of Hari-katha. The only shortage in this world is the shortage of discourses about the Lord, the shortage of knowledge about the Lord. A hundred out of a hundred people here are always busy multiplying their riches and enjoyment – always busy worrying about their food and clothes. From dawn to dusk, people only think how they can become great, how they can survive and establish their good name and fame, how they can earn more money. They have no time to think about the Lord...

People are like that not only here in India but all over the world. This is the Age of Kali. This is the age of quarrel (kalah). People fight each other over ten–twenty rupees. We pretend to take initiation from gurudev, but instead of becoming servants of our gurudev, we become guru-bhogi (we use our guru) or guru-tyagi (we reject our guru). Who is actually called a disciple?

One time, Srila Prabhupad was asked, 'Is everyone who takes initiation called a disciple?' Srila Prabhupad replied, 'No, everybody cannot be a disciple. Only those who place the order of their guru on their heads and follow it to a T are called disciples.' And who is called a sadhu? A sadhu always speaks about Lord Krishna – they never speak about anything else. They always worry that you do not live only thinking about your bodies, they always worry about your spiritual welfare, they always see whether you are practising Krishna consciousness or not. And they are always busy utilising everything in service to Lord Krishna.

Sri Bhakti Siddhanta Vani
'If someone does not consider it necessary to faithfully follow their Guru and the Vaishnavs, their endeavour to serve the Lord is not service to the Lord—it is service to maya.'

If we do so many things and Guru is not happy, that is not service, that is
karma—some reaction will come and we will lose our service.
