(8/10) Wasted Time, Wasted Life His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Hari-katha does not enter everyone's ears. Only if you are disposed to service (sevonmukha), if you want to serve Lord Krishna – if you have attachment and love for Krishna – then the subject matter of all these discourses will enter your ears; otherwise, it will not. Always remember this. Always practise Krishna consciousness. Serve the Lord, chant the Lord's glories, think about Sri Sri Nitai-Gaura and chant Their kirtan. The large kirtan books we have brought with us have finished, but you can buy the small, pocket-size, edition. Also, you can find what I have been telling you today in my books. I have written them in simple language. Read them at home when you have free time. You will find Nityananda Prabhu's kirtans in the Nityananda Mahimamrita book – we have recently reprinted it. You spend so much money at all kinds of places. You go to various outings and festivals and waste much money there, but you cannot spare some money to buy a book about the Lord. Devotees take so much trouble to make, print and distribute these books going door to door, but you say, 'Oh, I cannot buy it, it is too expensive.' How unfortunate you are! Please take books with you. Chant kirtans every morning and evening, the same kirtans that I have chanted here today. Learn these kirtans by heart. You waste so much time watching TV, talking gramya-katha, going out in the evenings, sitting and playing with your mobile phones, wasting your time. If you could instead spend this time on the Lord, there will be a record of that in your account. You know that Chitragupta is writing your diary, recording what you are doing every day. When you leave this body, they will open that diary, and based on your records, they will give you your mark – then you will see if you pass or fail. If you pass, you will go away; and if you fail, you will come back here again. Out of 60,000 jiva souls, only one soul gets a human body, and the rest 59,999 souls get all kinds of other bodies of insects, flies, mosquitoes and other animals who live on the land, in the water or in the sky. So, it is very hard to get a human birth. The problem is that we get this human body, but we simply waste this chance. We do not appreciate it. 'Vrddha-kala aola, saba sukha bhagala, pida-vase hainu katara (বৃদ্ধকাল আওল, সব সুখ ভাগল, পীড়াবশে হইনু কাতর). Now old age has come and all happiness has fled—distressed by diseases, I have become miserable' (Saranagati). When we are small children, we enjoy in the lap of our mothers, petted and smothered with affection; then, we go to school and study; after that, we live our material life, start a family, we worry about our wives and children; and when old age comes, we end up petting and looking after our grandchildren. Only when the end comes will we think of the Lord, but it will be too late. When the time comes, your family will carry you on their shoulders, crying, 'Bolo Hari! (Chant the Lord's Name!)' but will you say, 'Hari' then? When it was time to say 'Hari' you did not do it, but when the body is dead, then they will tell you to say 'Hari' – but the dead body will not do that. You must dry rice paddy when there is sun; in the same way, you must practise Krishna consciousness while you still have time. That is my prayer to you all. I keep telling this to you with folded palms, again and again.
