(6) A Test of Chastity

At another time, when Krishna lived in Mother Yasoda's house, He was also ill (He had a very high fever), but that time He Himself came disguised as a doctor and said,

'Mother, your Gopal is very sick.'

'Yes, Doctor, He has a very bad fever. What should I do?' Mother Yasoda asked, anxiously.

'You should put water on Him.'

'I have been putting so much water, but it does not help!'

'Yes, but what water did you put? You must get water from the Yamuna in a pot with a hundred holes, and it must be brought by a chaste lady who has never seen any other man's face. If such a girl can bring it, then He will recover,' the doctor said (it was Krishna Himself, disguised as a doctor).

Hearing the doctor's words, Mother Yasoda thought, 'Who in Vrindavan can be that chaste girl? I must ask Jatila nor Kutila (Radharani's mother-in-law and sister-in-law). They always say that this girl is bad, that girl is bad, Radharani is bad, everybody is bad, then they must be good themselves.' So, she came to them and asked them,

'Jatila, please come with me, I need to get water brought from the Yamuna in a pot with a hundred holes...'

'But it is not possible!' Jatila replied. 'How can you bring water in a pot with a hundred holes? All the water will fall out!'

'No, no, come with me, come. Please try!'

'All right, let us see what happens.'

Jatila put the pot into the water, and when she lifted it, all the water fell out through the holes. She could not do it. Kutila also could not do it. At first, she said, 'If Mother could not do it, how will I be able to do it?'

'No, no, come and try. Please,' Mother Yasoda insisted.

So, Kutila put the pot into the water, and when she lifted it, all the water fell out, too.

Mother Yasoda was puzzled, 'Who is that chaste girl then?' Then, the doctor came again.

'Mother', he said, 'your judgement was wrong. That chaste girl is Srimati Radhika. Ask Her.'

'Radhika?' Mother Yasoda frowned. Then, she went to Her and said, 'Mother Radhe, please come with me. Gopal is very sick. Jatila and Kutila could not do anything. Can You please come and try to bring water? There is nobody else left; the doctor told me to ask You.'

Radharani understood, 'This is Krishna's lila. Everything happens according to His will.' So, taking Krishna's Name, She put the pot into the water, and suddenly Krishna appeared in the water and closed all the holes with His fingers. Radharani brought the water to Mother Yasoda's house, and Krishna recovered. In this way, Krishna showed that Srimati Radhika is the highest among all gopis.

We must know these things. We must understand how we must serve the Lord. We must be sincere and selfless. If we think about what is good and what is bad for us, then what need is there for the Lord? If we manage our lives ourselves, we will get nowhere. Outside people do not have any understanding of devotion...
