(2/3) Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya's Plan

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Nabadwip Dham Parikrama, Day Three
19 March 2019, parikrama, part 6
Translated from Bengali

Having heard that Mahaprabhu was going to make His advent in Mayapur, the guru of demigods, Brihaspati, left King Indra's assembly and took birth as Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya. He knew that Gaurasundar would come in Kali-yuga, so he thought, 'I will not stay here long. The Lord will leave Nabadwip and come to Puri, so I will go to Puri.' Before Mahaprabhu appeared in Mayapur, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya left Nabadwip and went to Puri. He became the head priest at the Jagannath Temple, in charge of all priests. He was a great scholar.

You have heard that when Mahaprabhu took sannyas and went to Puri, He came to Atharnala. There, He asked Nitai, 'Nityananda, where is My danda?' Nityananda Prabhu replied, 'Prabhu, when You were doing kirtan, You became overwhelmed with ecstasy and fainted, falling down on Your danda. Your danda broke into three pieces.' Nityananda Prabhu lied. Actually, in this way, He showed, 'You took eka-dandi sannyas, but You will reveal in this world tridandi-sannyas later.' That is why Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur revealed tridandi-sannyas in this world. Nityananda Prabhu's concept was that tridandi-sannyas is taken with body, mind and words (actions, thoughts and speech). Our Gurudev also explained it another way – he said that tridandi-sannyas means being humble, tolerant and giving honour to others.

তৃণাদপি সুনীচেন তরোরিব সহিষ্ণুনা ।
অমানিনা মানদেন কীর্ত্তনীয়ঃ সদা হরিঃ ॥

trnad api sunichena taror api sahisnuna
amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih

'One who is humbler than a blade of grass, more forbearing than a tree, who gives due honour to others without desiring it for himself, is qualified to always chant the Holy Name of Krishna.'

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.239)

Becoming a sannyasi means you must be humble.

So, when Mahaprabhu heard about His danda getting broken, He told Nitai, 'Are You kidding Me? I left Nabadwip taking nothing with Me – I took only one stick , but You broke even that... I will not go with you all! Either you all go first and I will go behind, or I will go first and you can go later.' All the devotees who were with Mahaprabhu discussed it among themselves and decided, 'We cannot go before the Lord. If He goes first, we will be able to see from afar where He is going.' They told Mahaprabhu about their decision, and Mahaprabhu started running so fast that nobody could keep up with Him!

Immersed in the thoughts about Lord Jagannath, Mahaprabhu rushed into the temple of Lord Jagannath. Stumbling unto the bamboo bar before the altar, He fell on the ground. Foam started coming out of His mouth, and He kept saying, 'Ja-ja-ga-ga, Ja-ja-ga-ga!' The temple priests rushed to Him, 'Who are You?' and were about to beat Mahaprabhu, but seeing His face, they did not dare raise their hand to Him. Instead, they called Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya to come and see who had come. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya came and seeing Mahaprabhu, ordered the priests, 'Whoever He is, let it. Bring Him to my house.'
