(7/7) Entering the Right Current

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Nrisingha Palli, Sri Gaura Purnima Day,
21 March 2019, morning class, part 7
Translated from Bengali

I will take two–five minutes more to address those who are going to take initiation, and when you come upstairs, I will give you the beads. Please listen carefully to what I will say.

This Holy Name is the wealth of divine love coming form Goloka (Golokera prema-dhana). In Satya-yuga, people practised meditation; in Treta-yuga, people made fire sacrifices; in Dvapar-yuga, people worshipped Deities; and the religion of Kali-yuga is chanting the Holy Name. This is stated in Srimad Bhagavatam. People lived for 100,000 years in Satya-yuga, for 10,000 years in Treta-yuga, and for 1,000 years in Dvapar-yuga. In Kali-yuga, people live only for 120 years. As the Age of Kali progresses, the duration of people's lives is also decreasing. The duration of Kali-yuga is 432,000 years, and only about 5,100 years have passed so far. You must remember this. The human lifetime in Kali-yuga lasts only 120 years – not only the life duration in this age is very short but also this age is full of faults.

Kali means 'kalaha', 'quarrel'. What is this quarrel or fighting for? For three things. Kanak (money), kamini (women) and pratistha (name and fame). People fight with one another because of money, because of lust and desires (people want to have more and more and more), and because of fame (people always want to be greater and bigger than others). Somebody wants to be a great Vaishnavs, and somebody is ready to kill another person just to become a prime minister. Just the other day, Satyajit Biswas was murdered – somebody thought, 'He is an obstacle. If he is killed, I can become the leader!' People kills each other to become greater; such is the fight for pratistha. These are the three things that people fight for in Kali-yuga.

So, although Kali-yuga is full of faults, there is one great quality in this age. In this age, Supreme Lord Sri Krishna appears as Gauranga Mahaprabhu, a combined form of Sri Sri Radha-Krishna. That is the great advantage of Kali-yuga. When the Lord comes as Gauranga Mahaprabhu, He comes to bestow His Holy Name: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. Bestowing this gift of the Holy Name in this world, the Lord also tells us, 'This gift comes down from Vrindavan through My guru-parampara (disciplic succession).'

You have heard the guru-parampara kirtan: this lines comes from Krishna to Brahma, from Brahma to Narad, from Narad to Vyasadev, from Vyasadev to Madhvacharya, and in this way it gradually comes to Madhavendra Puri, then Ishwar Puri, and from Ishwar Puri to Mahaprabhu. Then, the line continues through Rupa Goswami, Sanatan Goswami and eventually comes to Srila Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaj, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, and then our Param Gurudev, Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. Srila Sridhar Maharaj made our Gurudev the next acharya, and Gurudev, in his lifetime, told me, 'If somebody sincerely wants to take initiation and wants to chant the Holy Name, you can initiate them.' It is necessary to sincerely want to take initiation. 'Sincerely' means you must follow all rules and regulations.

This is the line that this seed of devotional creeper is passed down through. This is our current. When there is a flood, the water of the Ganges fills lakes, tube wells, canals and beels [lake-like wetlands], but do all these waterbodies become the Ganges? They do no. But when some water enters the Ganges, that water becomes the Ganges. So, when some currents come out of the Ganges, they are not considered to be the Ganges anymore (for example, there is a current of the Ganges flowing to the right that went to Nadanghat – that river is not the Ganges). In the same way, if you want to get the real Holy Name, you must come to the current through which it comes. These are not my words – these are Gurudev's words. I told you before that I only keep 'chewing the chewed' – I only tell you whatever Gurudev told. We must remember our line.

Now those who have the fortune please come with me upstairs. For those who are staying here, I will come back later; for now, stay and chant kirtan.

Jay Srila Guru Maharaj ki jay.
Harinam-sankirtan ki jay.
Nitai Gaura premanande Hari bol.

Ups and Downs of Spiritual Life
'We want quality, we do not want quantity. Do not follow, do not run behind maya (illusion)—do not run in a zigzag way after things, do not run behind gorgeous things. Simple living, simple heart, and without deceitful devotion—these are the main things in spiritual life.'

We should not fight, should not quarrel—we must tolerate and harmonise with everybody, with the society and the people around you.
