(4/6) Wasted Time – Wasted Life

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Pancha Palli, preaching programme, noon
12 November 2019, part 4
Translated from Bengali

Everybody in this world is looking for love, but the love that you find in this world is not real love – it is all lust! The love of this world is full of greed, hankering, lust, anger, and we always crave that kind of love. We spend all our days, from morning till night, on eating, sleeping, fearing and mating. We waste our time.

You do not understand it now. You think, 'I will live more!', 'I will eat more!' but can any of you be sure that you are not going to leave this world tomorrow or this very moment? Nobody knows this. Despite this, you think, 'I have many years to live', 'I still have many years to eat nice things and wear nice clothes.' Even when you get old, you still think that you have much time. As the result, you have no time for the Lord or to chant the Holy Name of the Lord.

We can talk so much – we can talk village talks, we can listen to the village news, we can listen to bad talks, we can talk about bad things, we can sit the whole day telling each other meaningless stories, we can sit in a shop the whole day chatting with the shopkeeper about politics and other material things. But we have not time to talk about the Lord or to listen about the Lord. We are so very unfortunate.

durlabha manava-janma labhiya samsare
krsna na bhajinu—duhkha kahiba kahare?

'I have got a very rare human life in this world, but I have not worshipped Lord Krishna. Whom will I tell about my misery?'

'samsara' 'samsara' kari' michhe gela kala
labha na ha-ila kichhu, ghatila janjala

'Time has passed as I have been busy with my material life, and the result is nothing—only garbage.'

kisera samsara ei chhayabaji praya
ihate mamata kari vrtha dina yaya

'What sort of world is this? It is only a trick, a show. While I affectionately take it as my own, days pass by in vain.'

dina yaya michha kaje nisa nidra-base
nahi bhavi marana nikate achhe base

'My days are passed in useless work and nights are wasted on sleeping. It never occurs to me that there is death sitting next to me.'

(Sri Kalyan-kalpataru, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)

Does it cross anybody's mind that death is sitting next to us? That is why we keep coming and going in this world again and again.

kaya bara eli kaya bara geli
tabu tattva na sikhili
nijer matha nije khaili
e dosa dibe kare bhai?

'Coming and going, coming and going, and never learnt anything. You have been eating your own brain, who will you blame now, brother?'

Who will you blame it on? It is our own fault! We are our own enemies. We do not have any other enemies except ourselves. In this world, all our enemies are inside us: kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (illusion), mada (madness), matsarya (envy). These six enemies live within us. There is lust, anger, greed within us. We are envious – we cannot tolerate it when others are doing well. All these things exist within us, that is why nobody is our enemy – we are our own enemies. Always remember this, it will be good for you.

We will not be in this world for a long time. Before you got this human birth, you had crossed millions of other lives. Even if you live for one hundred years this time, how much time is it actually compared to all those millions of lives you have already lived? But you are wasting this time on useless things. You live like dogs, cats and goats. Even dogs can live in big buildings, even dogs can travel by planes. You take rickshaws, taxis or totos, but I have seen that there are dogs who have passports and travel abroad. You sleep in a small mud house, and somebody sleeps in a three-storey house, but in either case days are passing. The only difference is that you spend your day in a mud house, and somebody spends their day in a three-storey house, but you can ask those who live in big houses if they are happy. What is happiness and how can you attain it? Where is happiness? The only happiness is in the Holy Name. If you can serve the Lord, you will find happiness. You can never find real happiness anywhere else. Those who understand it and who have service mood do not run behind all the other material things – they do not run behind money, boys, girls, or fame. They do not forget that they are eternal servants of the Lord. But we forget it.

'কৃষ্ণ-নিত্যদাস'—জীব তাহা ভুলি' গেল ।
এই দোষে মায়া তার গলায় বান্ধিল ॥

'krsna-nitya-dasa'—jiva taha bhuli' gela
ei dose maya tara galaya bandhila

'The jiva soul forgot that it is an eternal servant of Krishna. Because of this mistake, illusion threw its ropes around the soul's neck.'

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.22.24)

Remember all these things. We forget about this and only live for the sake of eating and sleeping. We live our lives enjoying nice food, visiting different places, having fun and enjoying in any way we can. But one day you will be held accountable for everything. ‘There are two clerks who are writing your diary (dui kande dui muhuri likhte achhe dairi, দুই কান্দে দুই মুহুরী লিখতে আছেন ডাইরী).’ They keep a diary for you and keep record of everything you do during the day, and the place where you will go to after death will be determined according to those records. You can become goats, frogs, earthworms, cows or bulls in your next lives. As you sow so you reap. If you do not want that kind of fate, then chant the Holy Name and come closer to the Lord in this birth. Do it while you have time! You think that you can do all this when you get old, but 'Vrddha-kala aola, saba sukha bhagala, pida-vase hainu katara When old age comes, all happiness will flee. Distressed by diseases, we become miserable' (Saranagati).

Jay Srila Guru Maharaj ki jay.

Let us chant some kirtan now.

Follow Gurudev's order, and do not think about whether the result is coming,
or whether Nama-aparadh or Nama-abhas are coming—that is not your department.
