Now we shall hear about the glories of Sri Guru from the holy mouths of Vaishnavs. Those of you who have brought children with you, please be considerate – do not speak and do not let them make noise. If you obstruct discourses about the Lord, it is an offence. If your children are restless, take them away and listen from afar. Please remember that you have come here to listen to the glorification of the Lord. So, stay quiet and listen to the glories of Sri Guru without causing any obstruction and let others listen, too. Please do not speak. I am requesting maharajs to please speak now.

[After the assembled honourable dham-bhusana sannyasis speak, His Divine Grace makes his address.]

You have been listening to Hari-katha from the holy mouths of Vaishnavs. This is your greatest fortune. Sravanam (listening about the Lord), kirtanam (chanting the Lord’s Name and glories), smaranam (remembering the Lord), archanam (worshipping the Lord’s Deities), vandanam (offering obeisances and prayers to the Lord), dasyam (serving the Lord as a servant), sakhyam (serving the Lord as a friend), atma-nivedanam (submitting yourself to the Lord), pada-sevanam (serving the Lord’s lotus feet) – these nine devotional practices reside on a corresponding island of Nabadwip. We are present now at Sri Godrumdwip, in the place called Devapalli, or Nrisingha Palli. This island is non-different from Nandiswar Hill where Nandagram is situated.

In the presence of all the Vaishnavs here, at Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math in Sri Nrisingha Palli, we are observing the holy appearance day of our supremely worshippable Sri Gurupadpadma Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj.

মূকং করোতি বাচালং পঙ্গুং লঙ্ঘয়তে গিরিম্ ।
যৎকৃপা তমহং বন্দে শ্রীগুরুং দীনতারণম্ ॥

mukam karoti vachalam pangum langhayate girim
yat krpa tam aham vande sri-gurum dina-taranam

‘The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill – all it takes is mercy from gurudev.’

(Bhavartha Dipika)

First, I am offering my full obeisance at the reddish soles of my Divine Master Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj’s holy feet, begging him for his causeless mercy and aspiring to serve him; after that, I am offering my full obeisance to all the assembled guru-varga, all my godbrothers, all the listeners, all the motherly lady devotees and all the devotees, to all the dhama-bhusana tridandipad sannyasis [renounced triple-staff monks who are the ornaments of the holy abode], brahmacharis and Vaishnavs. I am offering my obeisance at your holy feet and praying for your mercy to this lowly soul.

Today is a very auspicious day in our lives. Actually it is an auspicious day for everybody. Observing and making festivals on the appearance days of Vaishnavs and guru-varga increases devotional enthusiasm. We sing in one of the kirtans, 'Chhaya vega dami' chhaya dosa sodhi' chhaya guna deha' dase (ছয় বেগ দমি' ছয় দোষ শোধি ছয় গুণ দেহ দাসে). Please subjugate my six urges, rectify my six defects and bestow the six good qualities upon this servant.' One of the six good qualities is to observe the appearance days of Vaishnavs and guru-varga with enthusiasm. There are many appearance and disappearance days mentioned in the calendar, and if we can remember those days, if we can remember those great souls and chant their glories, then even if you have no direct association of devotees, it can bring you supreme benefit. Always remember this. Take calendars with you and keep them at home. Wake up in the morning and check the calendars to see which of the guru-varga's appearance or disappearance day it is today. We must observe these days with enthusiasm. This is very important for everybody who has come to this devotional line and for anybody who wants to genuinely practise Krishna consciousness.

More Than Meets the Eye
'Gurudev is pleased through service. We may not be able to see it with our eyes, but that is because our eyes are always full of dust. We may see and understand him only externally..'

Big things are waiting for you, but you will not get it if you are not tolerant.
