Immerse Yourself In Kirtan

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad

Translated from Bengali

কয় বার এলি কয় বার গেলি
তবু তত্ত্ব না শিখিলি ।
নিজের মাথা নিজে খাইলি
এ দোষ দিবি কারে ভাই ?

kaya bara eli kaya bara geli
tabu tattva na sikhili
nijer matha nije khaili
e-dosa dibe kare bhai?

"Coming and going, coming and going, and never learnt anything. You have been eating your own brain, who will you blame now, brother?"

Whose fault is it? If the child does not cry, how will the mother know when it is time to give milk? So, if I do not make a step forward—if I do not call the Lord, if I do not remember the Lord's words—then the Lord will not come forward to us. If you make one step towards the Lord, the Lord will make ten steps towards you. Therefore, it is necessary to have a strong desire.

When Mother Yasoda was going to bind Krishna, she tried very hard—and every time Krishna showed that it is not possible to bind Him with an ordinary rope. No matter how much rope Mother Yasoda brought, she could not bind Gopal. Finally, Gopal took pity—He saw, "My mother is taking so much trouble for Me," and He allowed her to bind Him. Vraja gopis' mood was also like that (they possess intense desire to serve Krishna). Prahlad Maharaj has so much devotion, but even he said, "I do not have that kind of devotion and love that gopis have." It is necessary to serve with love, and it is necessary to always pay close attention to what Vraja gopis like to eat, what Gurudev likes, what Gurudev wants, etc. You must note what you can do to please Gurudev (what Gurudev likes), to please the Lord, and try to do that.

I have told you before also—you will not get a letter from the Lord. If you send a letter to the Lord, you will not get a reply, but if we tell about our unhappiness and happiness to Gurudev, he will convey to us the news from the Lord. If a patient sees a doctor but does not tell everything honestly, the doctor will not be able to prescribe medication—the medication will be wrong then. In the same way, we must tell everything to our Gurudev openly, with an open heart and soul—we must tell what difficulty we have, what obstacles we have in our practising life. We must ask about it openly, honestly, then we will be able to progress on the path of spiritual life.

If you practise spiritual life and become tired, start slacking, "I cannot do any more!", it means your mind is sick. Many say, "I am not feeling well," "My health is not right," but it is not your body that is sick, it is your mind that is sick. Our mind is always swayed in different directions—it always goes in different directions. However, if you want to keep your mind steady and peaceful and direct it towards the Lord, you must loudly chant the Holy Name.

We have kirtan books—chant five kirtans in the morning and five kirtans in the evening. Chant clapping your hands, or if you can, buy kartals and chant with kartals. It takes only fifteen-twenty minutes; sit and chant kirtans. Chant Guru vandana, Vaishnav vandana, Pancha-tattva vandana, Nityananda vandana, and Mahaprabhu vandana, Radha-Krishna vandana, then maha-mantra. Chant in this way every day. If you chant the Lord's Name and pray to the Lord, the Lord will be very pleased. You must chant kirtan with your heart....
