Service Eagerness and Attachment

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Kolkata-Worldwide, 14 June 2020, part 3

Srila Gurudev would always chant,

emana durmati samsara bhitare
padiya achhinu ami
tava nija-jana kona mahajane
pathaiya dile tumi

"O Lord! I am very wicked-minded and have fallen into this material world, but You have sent a great soul, Your associate (to rescue me)."

(Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Saranagati)

"Tava nija-jana" means Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's associate, or parsada.

tomare tarite sri-krsna-chaitanya
navadvipe avatara
toma hena kata dina-hina jane
karilena bhava-para

"Sri Krishna Chaitanya has appeared in Nabadwip to deliver you. He has brought many humble souls just like you to the shore of the ocean of material existence."

(Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Saranagati)

This is the glorification of Mahaprabhu, told by Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur.

This pure conception of Krishna consciousness, our spiritual line that is given to us by Srila Gurudev and Srila Guru Maharaj, is very sweet. It is necessary to connect with it and to have faith; it is necessary to have proper surrender (saranagati), and to have humility, tolerance, to give honour to others.

dainya, daya anye mana, pratistha-varjana
chari gune guni hai karaha kirtana

"Humility, compassion, honouring others, and giving up prestige—become qualified with these four qualities and chant the Name."

(Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Sri Siksastakam Giti)

Dainya, daya—be kind, be humble, and give honour to others. Always reject name and fame in your life—we must always reject pratistha.

kanaka-kamini, pratistha-baghini,
chhadiyachhe yare sei ta vaisnava

"Those who have given up money, women, and fame, are the true Vaishnavs."

(Vaishnav Ke? 11)

We can practise through singing all these wonderful songs.

sri-krsna-chaitanya prabhu jive daya kari'
svaparsada sviya dhama saha avatari

"Being merciful to the souls, Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu descends with His associates and abode."

atyanta durlabha prema karibare dana
sikhaya saranagati bhakatera prana

"To distribute the most rare form of divine love, He teaches surrender, which is the life of the devotees."

dainya, atma-nivedana, goptrtve varana
'avasya raksibe krsna'—visvasa palana

"(1) Humility, (2) self-submission, (3) embracing the Lord’s guardianship, (4) maintaining the faith that 'Krishna will certainly protect me'..."

(Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Saranagati)

It is necessary to be humble, tolerant and patient. Patience is necessary in everything. The problem is that our tolerance power is very little—if somebody chastises us, we cannot tolerate it. If somebody chastises you, if somebody uses some bad words towards you, why must you be hurt? If somebody says something bad to you, if somebody swears you, what is the problem? You must think that they are suffering very much, that is why they are using such words, but we do not mind it because if somebody scolds us, then our tolerance power will increase, it is good for us.

bhakti-anukula matra karyera svikara
bhakti-pratikula bhava—varjanangikara

"(5) Engaging only in activities that are favourable to devotion, (6) rejecting everything unfavourable to devotion ..."

sad-anga saranagati ha-ibe yanhara
tanhara prarthana sune sri-nanda-kumara

"These are the six types of saranagati, and if you can surrender in all the six ways, Sri Nanda-kumar Krishna will hear your prayer."

(Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Saranagati)

This is a very nice song.

manasa, deha, geha, yo kichhu mora
arpilun tuya pade nanda-kisora

"I have offered my mind, my body, my household, and whatever else may be mine at Your feet, O Nanda Kisor!"

sampade vipade jivane marane
daya mama gela tuya o pada varane

"In good times and in bad, in life and in death, all responsibility has gone away by embracing Your feet."

marabi rakhabi yo ichchha tohara
nitya-dase prati tuya adhikara

"You may kill me or protect me as You wish. You have full authority over Your eternal servant."

"Marabi rakhabi"—"You can kill me, You can keep me, I do not mind it. Prabhu, I am always at Your service. I am always ready for Your service, for Your order, and I am always waiting for Your order. Whatever order comes from You, I am always ready to do it." Devotee must be this kind of soldiers of the Lord, of Gurudev. "I am always ready to do service." It is necessary to be an active servitor, not an inactive servitor.

There are so many servitors in this world, and everybody does some service, but only very few of them actually have service attachment (seva-asakti). It is necessary to be attached to your service. Another thing is that sometimes we do something and we always become proud of our service. Do not be proud. Pride comes before a fall. Always remember this.

We are tiny servitors—what can we do for the Lord? We are small, we are like a mosquito, like some small bird. How much are we capable of doing for the Lord? Still, we will try. You have probably read in Ramayana that when they were making a bridge to get to Lanka, all the monkeys headed by Hanuman brought so many huge stones to make the bridge, and at that time there were also some squirrels that helped them. How did they do it? They would go to the ocean, dip their tails into the water, then cover their tails with sand, come to the bridge and then shake off the sand where the bridge was being built and pat it down with their tails to press the sand down. Then they would go back to the ocean and repeat it again and again. Little by little they were helping. We must also try to be like this—we will also try to do something. Everybody does big, big service, and we can also try to do some small service.

Prema-vivarta: Sincerity, Renunciation
'Serve Gaura's devotees with perfect sincerity, and then, brother, you will reach Sri Krishna's feet. Chant 'Gauranga' and associate with Gaura's devotees. Chant 'Hare Krishna' and dance.'

Sri-rupa-manjari-pada
'The snake of absence of your sight is burning me with its poison, day after day my whole being is in feverish agony. O Rupa! Please be merciful to me, give me shelter at your lotus feet. Narottam is praying for your shelter.'

Sometimes it may come to your mind that what you are doing is bhajan, service,
but it may be all karma.
