Lord's Avatar His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Jay Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami
Maharaj ki jay I am very happy to see you all because it is Sunday today and it is also an auspicious day—today is the appearance day of Bhagavan Sri Vamandev and the appearance day of Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu. First, I am giving my full obeisance at the lotus feet of my beloved Gurudev Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj. Then, I am offering my full obeisance to all guru-varga. I am asking you all and all the devotees to please accept my humble obeisance. Please forgive my offence. Today is a very auspicious day because it is the appearance day (avirbhav) of Sri Vamandev and Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu, and tomorrow is the appearance day of Sach-chid-ananda Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur. I would like to sing only one song now. We sing it every year on this festival. This song, Sri Dasavatara Stotram, was composed by Srila Jayadev Goswami. Everybody knows this song, and I will try to sing it now. [His Divine Grace chants Sri Dasavatara Stotram, concluding with,]
বেদানুদ্ধরতে জগন্তি বহতে ভূগোলমুদ্বিভ্রতে ।
vedan udharate jaganti vahate bhu-golam udbibhrate I offer my obeisance unto Sri Krsna, who assumes ten forms and rescues the Vedas, upholds Mandara Mountain, uplifts the earth, rips apart demons, deceives Bali Maharaj, kills the ksatriyas, conquers Ravan, carries a plough, shows compassion, and annihilates the wicked. (Srila Jayadev Goswami) Jay Dasa-avatara ki jay! As I have already said, it is a very auspicious day today because it is Vamandev's avirbhav. Every year on this dvadasi, we first perform archan for Vamandev, then offer some sweet rice, and with that sweet rice prasadam we do the paran (break our fast) on the dvadasi day. We did in the morning today. We were singing just now a song glorifying the ten avatars of the Lord. These ten avatars are Matsya avatar, Kurma avatar, Varaha avatar, Parasuram avatar, Buddha avatar, Rama avatar, Nrisingha avatar, Vaman avatar, Baladev avatar, and Kalki avatar. The incarnation of Vamandev is the fifth. There are also many more lila-avatars of the Lord—among twenty-five lila-avatars, Sri Vamanadev is the eighteenth avatar. There is a chaturbhuja (four-formed) manifestation of Lord Sri Krishna in Dvaraka, namely Vasudev, Sankarshan, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha. They are extensions of Krishna's prabhav-vilasa (divine forms in which the Lord expands Himself to enjoy His variegated pastimes). Besides that, there are also Deities of the four forms of Narayan—Pradyumna, Trivikram, Vamana, Sridhar. Vaman is also the presiding god of Ashadha (June/July) month. When Vaishnavs put the twelve tilaks on their bodies to mark the symbols of the Lord's Temple (Hari-mandira), they place a tilak mark on their left side and pray to Vamana-avatar, "Om Vamanaya namah. (I offer obeisance to Lord Vamana.)" It is said in Srimad Bhagavatam that Lord Vamandev holds a conch, a disk, a club, and a lotus flower. Lord Vamanadev is present in this universe as Keshava in Mathura, Jagannath in Nilachal, Madhav in Prayag, Madhusudan in Mandar, Vasudev in Anandaranya, Padmanabha, and Janardan, Vishnu in Vishnukanchi, and Hari in Mayapur. There are fourteen manvantaras in one day (kalpa) of Lord Brahma, and one manvantra (lifespan of Manu) equals to 71 chatur-yugas (one chatur-yuga is 4,320,000 years). The fourteen Manus appearing with a day of Lord Brahma represent fourteen manvantara-avatars, or Manus, manifesting as empowered incarnations of the Lord. In Srimad Bhagavatam, Sri Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyas Muni describes the appearance of Lord Vamandev and how Lord Vamandev Himself gave Sutalpuri (Sutal planet) to Bali Maharaj. We would like to read a little from Srimad Bhagavatam, but we do not want to go into elaborate detail.
