আমার জীবন, সদা পাপে রত,
নাহিক পুণ্যের লেশ ।
পরেরে উদ্বেগ, দিয়াছি যে কত,
দিয়াছি জীবেরে ক্লেশ ॥১॥

amara jivana, sada pape rata,
nahika punyera lesa
parere udvega, diyachhi ye kata,
diyachhi jivere klesa [1]

'My life is always engrossed in sin. There is not a trace of piety in it. I have been giving others so much anxiety and pain.'

নিজ সুখ লাগি', পাপে নাহি ডরি',
দয়াহীন স্বার্থপর ।
পর সুখে দুঃখী, সদা মিথ্যাভাষী,
পরদুঃখ সুখকর ॥২॥

nija sukha lagi', pape nahi dari',
daya-hina svartha-para
para-sukhe duhkhi, sada mithya-bhasi,
para-duhkha sukha-kara [2]

'I am not afraid to engage in sinful activities for the sake of my own happiness. I am merciless and selfish. I always lie—I feel unhappy to see others happy, and I feel happy to see others sad.'

We are happy when we see others unhappy. When we see others unhappy, we clap our hands for joy.

অশেষ কামনা, হৃদি মাঝে মোর,
ক্রোধী দম্ভপরায়ণ ।
মদমত্ত সদা, বিষয়ে মোহিত,
হিংসা-গর্ব্ব বিভূষণ ॥

asesa kamana, hrdi majhe mora,
krodhi, dambha-parayana
mada-matta sada, visaye mohita,
himsa-garva vibhusana

'My heart is filled with endless desires. Angry, arrogant and vain, I am always intoxicated and engrossed in the material world. I am adorned with pride and envy.'

নিদ্রালস্য-হত, সুকার্য্যে বিরত,
অকার্য্যে উদ্যোগী আমি ।
প্রতিষ্ঠা লাগিয়া, শাঠ্য আচরণ,
লোভহত সদা কামী ॥৪॥

nidralasya hata, sukarye virata,
akarye udyogi ami
pratistha lagiya, sathya-acharana,
lobha-hata sada kami [4]

'Ruined by laziness and sleep, I am averse to doing anything good and eager to do nothing. I behave crooked desiring prestige. I am ruined by greed and always want something.'

এহেন দুর্জ্জন, সজ্জন-বর্জ্জিত,
অপরাধী নিরন্তর ।
শুভকার্য্যশূন্য, সদানর্থমনা,
নানা দুঃখে জর জর ॥৫॥

e hena durjana, sajjana-varjita,
aparadhi nirantara
subha-karya-sunya, sadanartha-manah,
nana-duhkhe jara jara [5]

'Such a bad person as I is shunned by good souls—I am a constant offender. I do not do anything good—instead, I am always filled with inauspiciousness. I am racked by various miseries.'

'E hena durjana sajjana-varjita': such bad people waste their time on anything and everything else except for sadhu-sanga (association of saints). We may hear only two things from our gurudev, but that can, and must, guide and mould our whole life. But the problem is that we cannot leave material world (visaya)... We only want to eat well, dress well, live well, sleep well. This is how we are becoming deha-rami (দেহারামী) – we live only for pleasing our senses. Do you understand what I am saying?

If you come to stay at the temple, you must follow rules and regulations and listen to what others tell you. That is why people do not want to stay at temples. People do not want to live in submission – they want to live independently. This is called svatantra-buddhi (স্বতন্ত্র-বুদ্ধি, 'independent' consciousness). It is for such people with this mentality that it is said, 'Jiver seva korte korte atma-kalyan labha haya (জীবের সেবা করতে করতে আত্মা-কল্যাণ লাভ হয়): you must serve jiva souls, and through that you will get mercy from them and from Lord Krishna. Maner kheyal khusimata bhajaner abhinayke bhajan bole na, guru-vaishnaver anugatye guru-vaishnaver seva kore tader mana santusti korar nama-i haya bhajan (মনের খেয়াল খুশিমতো ভজনের অভিনয়কে ভজন বলে না, গুরু-বৈষ্ণবের আনুগত্যে গুরু-বৈষ্ণবের সেবা করে তাঁদের মান সন্তুষ্টি করার নামই হয় ভজন ।): Satisfying the whims of your mind and pretending to practise Krishna consciousness is not what Krishna consciousness is. Krishna consciousness means following your guru and Vaishnavs cent-per-cent and serving your guru, Vaishnavs, satisfying their minds.' We must always think about this kind of Krishna consciousness life. If you can always practise in this way, you will get the highest benefit.

প্রভু ! তব পদযুগে মোর নিবেদন ।
নাহি মাগি দেহ-সুখ, বিদ্যা, ধন, জন ॥
নাহি মাগি স্বর্গ, আর মোক্ষ নাহি মাগি ।
না করি প্রার্থনা কোন বিভূতির লাগি’ ॥

prabhu tava pada-yuge mora nivedana
nahi magi deha-sukha, vidya, dhana, jana
nahi magi svarga ara moksa nahi magi
na kari prarthana kona vibhutira lagi

'O Lord, I am appealing at Your holy lotus feet—I do not pray for bodily pleasure, learning, wealth, or followers. I do not pray for heaven, I do not pray for liberation, and I do not pray for any godly opulence or powers.'

'I do not hanker for heaven, I do not want liberation, and I do not pray for any opulence or powers.'

নিজ কর্ম্ম-গুণ-দোষে যে যে জন্ম পাই ।
জন্মে জন্মে যেন তব নাম গুণ গাই ॥

nija-karma-guna-dose ye ye janma pai
janme janme yena taba nama guna gai

'Whatever birth I get as the result of my own actions and good and bad qualities, may I birth after birth sing Your Name and glories.'

I do not care what birth I may get – I only want to chant Your glories and the glories of Your Holy Name. If I cannot chant Your glories, my life is meaningless. The Lord's Name, form, pastimes, associates and features are non-different from the Lord Himself. There is no difference between the Name (Nama) and He whose Name it is (Nami). That is why it is said, 'Nija Nama kari dana (নিজ নাম করি’ দান): the Lord comes and gives His own Name (the Hare Krishna maha-mantra) to this world.' The Lord Himself brought His Holy Name to this world! Gurudev places this Holy Name in your hearts, and it will then sprout up on your tongues: as you chant and chant the Holy Name, you will become immersed in constant thoughts about Krishna.

How many people have got there?

We must always chant the Holy Name, we must always chant the Holy Name of Krishna. Chanting Krishna's Name, meditating on Krishna, knowing only Krishna – everything must be percolated with thoughts about Krishna.
