(5/7) Nought in a Knot

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Uluberia, 19 December 2020, noon, part 5
Translated from Bengali

Brothers, you must practise Krishna consciousness. If you do not practise Krishna consciousness properly, you will not get any result. Do you understand it? It is necessary to practise genuinely. Take shelter of a bona fide guru and practise Krishna consciousness. You cannot do anything in this world unless you practise Krishna consciousness. How long will you live in this world?...

How can we chant the Holy Name? Does everyone have the right to chant it? No. What did Mahaprabhu say about the qualification for chanting the Holy Name?

তৃণাধিক হীন দীন অকিঞ্চন ছার ।
আপনে মানবি সদা ছাড়ি অহঙ্কার ॥

trnadhika hina, dina, akinchana chhara
apane manabi sada chhadi ahankara

'Give up ego and consider yourself lower than a blade of grass, poor, destitute and vile.'

বৃক্ষসম ক্ষমাগুণ করবি সাধন ।
প্রতিহিংসা ত্যজি অন্যে করবি পালন ॥

vrksa-sama ksama-guna karabi sadhana
pratihimsa tyaji anye karabi palana

'Practise tolerance like that of a tree, stop ill-treating others and nurture everyone.'

জীবন-নির্ব্বাহে আনে উদ্বেগ না দিবে ।
পর-উপকারে নিজ-সুখ পাসরিবে ॥

jivana-nirvahe ane udvega na dibe

'Live without causing anxiety to others; do good unto others forsaking your own happiness.'

(Gitavali, Sri Siksastakam Giti, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur; purpose to Siksakstakam, 3)

Those who give up their own happiness for the happiness of others can chant the Holy Name. Sadhus leave all happiness and comfort. I also could say, 'Nityananda, I cannot come,' and stay and rest in Kolkata. I came from preaching two days ago and spent the whole day driving around Kolkata yesterday, so the body was quite tired. Actually, it is not the body that gets sick – it is the mind that gets sick. If you say, 'No, I will not go. I will stay in and rest today,' this is a sick mind.

[An elderly devotee gets up to say something.]

What do you want to say?

Devotee humbly petitions: O Maharaj, please give your mercy to this lowly soul...

There is no mercy for you yet. First take service. When I give you seva-adhikar (right to do service; service qualification), then you will get mercy. Leave everything and stay at the temple, then I will tell you that you have done some service. I have made a temple here in Uluberia, so come and stay here. Your thoughts, your meditation, your all being should be here at the temple. 'How can I serve my guru?' this is what you must always think about. Do not think about yourself, 'What will I eat? What will I wear? Where will I sleep?' Leave everything to the Lord. It is the Lord's matter. How your children will grow up? How will your children be raised well? If the Lord does not arrange everything, do we have the power to do anything? He is the master, but we do everything bypassing Him. The Lord says, 'Of the numbers, I am one.' If you put many zeros together, it is still zero, but once you put one before a zero, it becomes ten, a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand or a hundred thousand, and so on. Suppose you think you have twenty rupees – you tie it carefully in a knot at the end of your sari, but when you later open it, you see that you actually have nothing. Srila Bhakti Kiran Giri Maharaj often said, 'You have zero tied in your sari knot: sunya granthi anchale bandhan (শূন্য গ্রন্থি অঞ্চলে বন্ধন; originally found in Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur's Kalyan-kalpataru).'

Bhajahu Re Mana
'O mind, serve the son of Nanda's lotus feet, which make one fearless. Having attained this rare human birth, cross over the ocean of material existence by associating with sadhus.'

Even if they live in another country, but they remember the festival, they will get
some sukriti through that. That is their hope.
