(1/13) Spiritual Conscience His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Jay Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami
Maharaj ki jay
Devotee: Jay Om Vishnupad Paramahamsa Jagad Guru Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj ki jay. Harinam sankirtan ki jay. Gaura premanande Hari bol.
Say with me:
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare Once again:
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare You have all come at the holy appearance day of Sri Gurupadpadma. Gurudev's appearance is not like some ordinary man's birthday. Gurudev's appearance means that the Lord sends on this day His own man to this world to speak about Him. If you want to hear about the Lord and glorify the Lord, you must listen to it with a clean, unobstructed mind, with your heart and soul and with faith. If somebody does not have faith, they will not be able to hear these things. You all went away many days ago, after Gaura Purnima, and we have not been able to meet during all this time. But you have all come now, and you can meet with all the devotees and hear the news. You have come to Navadwip Dham, to Sri Godrumdwip, to the place of Sri Nrisinghadev. This is a place of the Lord. It is also called 'Devapalli' because 330,000,000 demigods live here. It is your great fortune that you have come here. It is hard to take even a speck of dust from this land. Some of you may not have got a room, so you are sleeping on the veranda or here in the nat-mandir. [Somebody's phone rings] Keep your mobile phones off from seven to nine in the evening. Do not use mobiles phones during these two hours. You are not some SP (Superintendent of Police) or DM (District Magistrate) who must take phone calls to solve some urgent matters. Leave all problems to the Lord. I am begging you to give me the alms of two hours of your time – do not speak during these two hours, stay quiet and listen about the Lord. I know that many of you are struggling to stay here because you are used to eating well and dressing well every day. It is said in one of the kirtans:
ভাল মন্দ খাই, হেরি, পরি, চিন্তাহীন ।
bhala manda khai, heri, pari, chinta-hina 'I eat, see and wear whatever I fancy without any thinking and never think that one day I will leave this body.' (Gitavali, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) [Somebody speaking] Again speaking? Can you not keep your mouths closed? When the Lord takes your mouth away from you, what will you do then? You will only moo and cry like a cow. If you are born as a cow or a monkey in your next life, what will you do then? You have got an opportunity to speak in this life, but you must only speak about Krishna. You always speak about others things, you always think about other things. Stop this. All this has been arranged for you, for your benefit – if you hear one–two things about the Lord, it can give you supreme benefit. You can eat dal, rice and vegetables at home too, but here you can take maha-prasad and try to stay despite the discomfort. I know you sleep one–two persons in a room, but here you have to sleep with ten other people in one room. It is inconvenient, but do not become deha-rami (দেহারামী; devoted to bodily comfort). You must tolerate. It is necessary to challenge and test your tolerance and patience. There are different times in a human life – there are good times and bad times. Sometimes happiness can come and sometimes unhappiness can come in our life. I have wrote about hell in one of my books. There are many kinds of hell, and in each of the places people suffer in so many ways. If you have never heard about it, read about it in the book (Guidance 3). You know that one can go to hell, but you should think what kind of life is there. Even writers say, 'Where are heaven and hell? They are not far! There is hell and heaven even among humans.' Is that not true? You can see heaven and hell in this world also – insects, bugs live in a drain, pigs eat stool, somebody eats rotten things, dead things. When a dog is hit on the road and dies, another dog comes and eats it. You can see all these things. Sadhus, gurus and Vaishnavs are very merciful – they do not want you to suffer like this, so they come to bring you to this line so that you can practise Krishna consciousness and come to the Lord.
ভাল মন্দ খাই, হেরি, পরি, চিন্তাহীন ।
bhala manda khai, heri, pari, chinta-hina 'I eat, see and wear whatever I fancy without any thinking and never think that one day I will leave this body.' (Gitavali, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) We never think that we will have to leave this body, but the truth is that everybody has to leave their bodies and go away from this world. I will also have to leave this body and go away – this body will be buried in the ground or burnt at a crematorium on the bank of the Ganges. There is nothing else to it. Otherwise, if there is no money, this body can be also thrown into the Ganges – it will float down the river until some dogs or other animals get it and eat it. You worry so much about this body now ('Where will I eat?', 'Where will I get clothes?', 'Where will I sleep?', 'What if it is hot or cold?'). You have not seen what is called real suffering. We often attend programmes at different places, and when I return to the temple in Kolkata late at night, I see that people sleep on footsteps, wrapped into blankets. Now they do not allow anybody to stay at train stations, so you can see many people sleeping on footsteps of closed shops. They have no house, and they lie on the ground in the cold... Think about those people. So, if you tolerate it and stay one–two nights on the veranda here, what will happen to you? Nothing. There is no problem at all. I have also gone through all this. Even after I joined the temple, I have had to go to many places, and I have been to many bad places where I had to suffer. You all know my story. I have also suffered. In my previous ashram, my father and mother often said, 'No pain, no gain (kasta karale kesta paoya yaya, কষ্ট করলে কেষ্ট পাওয়া যায়: lit. "if you struggle, you can get the Lord.").' It is necessary to be able to tolerate. Mahaprabhu also said: those who have the power of tolerance have the right to chant the Holy Name. We chanted yesterday:
তৃণাধিক হীন দীন অকিঞ্চন ছার ।
trnadhika hina, dina, akinchana chhara 'Give up ego and consider yourself lower than a blade of grass, poor, destitute and vile.'
বৃক্ষসম ক্ষমাগুণ করবি সাধন ।
vrksa-sama ksama-guna karabi sadhana 'Practise tolerance like that of a tree, stop ill-treating others and nurture everyone.' (Gitavali, Sri Siksastakam Giti, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur; purpose to Siksakstakam, 3) We must be humbler than a blade of grass, more tolerant than a tree, and we must give honour to others. You worry so much about your body ('Where can I eat nicely?', 'Where can I sleep nicely?', 'How can I avoid problems?'), but if this body is gone this instant, they will light incense to get rid of the smell, wrap the body and throw it away at a crematorium. Sometimes, many people die, so when you come in the evening, there are many bodies lying there to be burnt the next afternoon, and flies and insects are eating these bodies. In villages, it is much better because they burn the bodies immediately, but in towns, they burnt them in furnaces. You have been worrying about this body for so long. If you stay with five or six other people in the room, you are very uncomfortable. Somebody sleeps with two–three nice blankets, and somebody does not get any blanket at all. You must have some human conscience: 'A person next to me is suffering, I will give them what I have.' If you treat others like this, if you help others, then it will not be necessary to tolerate any problems. Sacrifice your life a little for the Lord.
