(8/13) Origin of Bhagavatam (2)

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Bankura Temple Anniversary Festival,
26 January 2021, part 8
Translated from Bengali

…Vyasadev remembered his son, Sukadev Goswami, who was at that time in the womb of his mother (Vyasadev’s wife). One day, Parasara Muni (Vyasadev’s father, who was a great scholar, expert in all scriptural knowledge) and many other rishis from various sampradayas came to Vyasadev and asked him to speak to Sukadev. They said, ‘Please talk to him. He has been sitting in his mother’s womb for twelve years already!’ Vyasadev agreed and went to speak to his son.

Sukadev Goswami could speak from his mother’s womb. Can you imagine it? Many people say that Krishna is a mortal human; they like to ask, ‘What is the proof that Krishna and Mahaprabhu are the Supreme Personalities of Godhead?’ When you have a child, is the child born wearing clothes? It is not, but Krishna appeared fully dressed, with tilaks, kanthi-mala, peacock feather, bracelets and many other ornaments. Mahaprabhu also appeared in this way. Ordinary human children are never born like this. This is the proof.

So, when all the rishis came to Vyasadev and asked him to call Sukadev, Vyasadev came to his wife and asked Sukadev, ‘Come out! Please come out of your mother’s womb!’ Sukadev replied, ‘I will not. If I come outside, I will be attacked by Maya and forget everything. I do not want it.’ It is true – once the soul emerges from the womb, it forgets everything:

কৃষ্ণ ভুলি’ সেই জীব অনাদি-বহির্ম্মুখ ।
অতএব মায়া তারে দেয় সংসারাদি-দুঃখ ॥

krsna bhuli’ sei jiva anadi-bahirmukha
ataeva maya tare deya samsaradi-duhkha

‘Forgetting Krishna, the soul turned towards the external illusory world in primeval times. As the result, illusion (Maya) gives such a soul various material miseries.’

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.20.117)

Then, all the rishis offered Vyasadev, ‘Listen, you have the power to stop Maya. Maya is created by the Lord, but you can stop her action for five minutes.’ Vyasadev asked Sukadev, ‘If I stop Maya’s action for five minutes, will you be able to come out then?’ Sukadev agreed. Then, Vyasadev stopped Maya’s action in this world for five minutes, and during this time, Sukadev came out of his mother’s womb.

What did Sukadev do first thing when he appeared? He immediately ran to the forest! Think about it – our children do not even start walking until two years old, but Sukadev, who was already twelve years old at that time, ran out of his mother’s womb. On the other hand, when a cow delivers a calf, the calf can already stand after two hours. The Lord can create anything. So, if a calf can learn to stand and walk just two hours after its birth, why cannot the Lord make it so that Sukadev could run?
