(11/13) Goloka at Your Home
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
যে দিন গৃহে, ভজন দেখি’,
ye dina grhe, bhajana dekhi’, ‘Any day there is devotional service at home, I see Goloka manifest itself in it. When I see the Ganges, the nectar flowing from the Lord’s feet, my happiness knows no end.’ (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) Every day wake up early in the morning, come for mangal-arati. Follow all rules and regulations strictly. Offer bhoga to the Lord five times a day. In this verse, bhajan (ye dina grhe bhajana dekhi) means service, not just kirtan. Bhajan means you will wake up early in the morning, wake up the Lord at four in the morning, offer arati, give balya-bhoga. Your mother will also wake up and cook in the morning, then you will offer this bhoga to the Lord. After that, you can go to work, and take some prasad with you in a tiffin box. In the evening, when you come back, wash your hands and feet, do arati, then your mother will offer bhoga in the evening. You must live following these rules. You must follow these things strictly, without fail. When you come home in the evening, offer arati, do Tulasi parikrama – if you have time, chant kirtans. If you do this, you will not have time to go to tea shops to discuss politics.
গ্রাম্যকথা না শুনিবে, গ্রাম্যবার্ত্তা না কহিবে ।
gramya-katha na sunibe, gramya-varta na kahibe ‘Do not listen to village talks, do not speak about village news. Do not eat fancy food, do not wear fancy clothes. Do not expect honour from others, give all respect to others. Always chant the Holy Name of Krishna and serve Radha-Krishna in your mind.’ (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.236–237) You do not need anything out of the world to serve the Lord.
ভক্তের জিনিষ প্রভু লুটিপুটি খায় ।
bhaktera jinisa prabhu lutiputi khaya ‘The Lord eats anything and everything when a devotee offers it to Him, but He does not want to take anything from a non-devotee.’ (Based on Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 2.9.185) A non-devotee cannot give anything to the Lord. On the contrary, they always want to get something from the Lord – they turn the Lord into their menial servant. But devotees serve the Lord and always think, ‘How can I make the Lord happy? How can I please the Lord?’ In this world, all people live at leisure: they sleep till eight, and when they wake up, they have some tea with milk, brush their teeth and do all the other things while the Lord stays as He is. If you live like this, you will not get any result. Goloka Vrindavan can be right at your home if you can turn your home into a temple and turn your family into a family of Krishna. ‘Kariya Krsnera samsara chhadi’ anachara (করিয়া কৃষ্ণের সংসার ছাড়ি' অনাচার). Leave bad habits and make your family a family of Krishna.’ You must give up bad habits. If you eat meat and fish and practise Krishna consciousness – do you think it will work? Suppose you make a fire sacrifice. If you put first one spoon ghee and then one spoon water into the fire, the fire will go out. Two things cannot go together; therefore, you must do what is favourable to devotion and you must reject what is unfavourable to devotion. If you do not reject the unfavourable, all your good practice will not bring the desired result. Both cannot go together. If you stand with your feet in two boats, how far will you go like this? You must practise Krishna consciousness properly. You have got these human bodies as a result of great fortune, and there is no guarantee that you will get such bodies ever again. If you cannot serve and worship the Lord in this birth, nobody can say how long you will have to wander throughout all the species again. Do you understand what I am saying? [His Divine Grace then concludes singing ‘Suddha-bhakata-charana-renu’ and chants other kirtans.]
তুলসী দেখি’, জুড়ায় প্রাণ,
tulasi dekhi’, judaya prana, ‘Tulasi Devi pleases Lord Madhav – whenever I see her, it soothes my heart. And honouring Gaura’s favourite spinach, I consider my life successful.’
ভকতিবিনোদ, কৃষ্ণভজনে,
bhakativinoda, krsna-bhajane, ‘Whatever is favourable to Krishna’s service, Bhaktivinod accepts that very happily every day.’ (Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)
