(10/13) Cut Off Material Attachment

The other day, ** was giving me various excuses, saying that he was not feeling well. I told him, ‘All right, I will send somebody to your house then. You are trying to cheat and play with the temple service – you do not want to serve the Lord! You are saying that you are unwell, all right, then I will send the Lord to your house. You will have to serve the Lord from there. When the Lord comes to your doorstep, where will you run? How will you not serve then?’ He keeps running away from the temple, and his mother makes excuses for him. I thought to myself, ‘OK, I will show you.’ So, I sent devotees to their house to preach for ten–fifteen days and came there myself yesterday. I returned to the temple yesterday (the same day) at half past ten at night, and today I hear that ** has left for Midnapore, so he could not come here today. He says, ‘Oh, I did not know you were coming.’ It is necessary to preach. It is necessary to preach Mahaprabhu’s message in this world. He told me, ‘Oh, the car we go by is bad, I have a health problem and cannot walk.’ I said, ‘OK, I am giving you the van. If you need a car, all right – you can preach so much with this car. If you need a car for preaching, it is not a problem – here, take it.’

We must practise strictly, following all rules and regulations. We must fast on ekadasi. We must practise Krishna consciousness as much as we can, without vaishnav-aparadha (offences to devotees), seva-aparadha (offences to service), dhama-aparadha (offences to holy places), nama-aparadha (offences to the Holy Name). Do not be fickle. Do what gurudev wants you to do. If you do not pay attention to what gurudev wants, you will not get any result. Please gurudev, and everyone will automatically be pleased.

We must all reach the nectar where we have come from. How long we have been living in the bondage of this material world! Until and unless our material attachment goes away, we will not feel attachment and love for the Lord and for the service of the Lord. That is why it is said:

সংসার সংসার করি মিছে গেল কাল ।
লাভ না হইল কিছু ঘটিল জঞ্জাল ॥

samsara samsara kari michhe gela kala
labha na haila kichhu ghatila janjala

‘I have wasted all my time on material life and family and have got nothing but garbage as the result.’

কিরূপে পাইব সেবা মুঞি দুরাচার ।
শ্রীগুরু-বৈষ্ণবে রতি না হৈল আমার ॥

ki-rupe paiba seva muni durachara
sri-guru-vaisnave rati na haila amara

‘I am so vile – how will I ever get service? I have not got any attachment to Sri Guru and Vaishnavs!’

‘I am so vile, so bad!’ We must always think like this about ourselves. We have no attachment to Sri Guru and Vaishnavs, but we are attached to so many other things. Have I not just told you that we understand who our parents, wives, friends and relatives are, but we have no attachment or love for our guru and Vaishnavs?

অশেষ মায়াতে মন মগন হইল ।
বৈষ্ণবেতে লেশমাত্র রতি না জন্মিল ॥

asesa mayate mana magana haila
vaisnavete lesa-matra rati na janmila

‘My mind is forever engrossed in illusion; not even a trace of attachment to Vaishnavs has developed in me.’

Our minds and hearts are engrossed in illusion, so we have no attachment to Vaishnavs…
