‘I offer my obeisance to him who perfectly fulfils his gurudev’s most cherished desires; who is fully adorned with the blessings of his gurudev’s associates; who is expert in all conceivable and inconceivable aspects of Vedic knowledge; who is the pre-eminent follower of Srila Rupa Goswami Prabhu’s line; who is known as “Govinda” (Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj); whose beautiful, effulgent, exalted form is infused with pure devotion; who is the guru of the entire universe; and who is the giver of the seed of divine love for the Supreme Lord.’

Today, by the mercy of Sri Gurupadpadma, we have gathered here at the evening assembly on the eve of the holy appearance day of Sriman Nityananda Prabhu to hear and speak some Hari-katha. The arati will begin shortly, so I will not take much time now. I will speak briefly.

I have got this opportunity to listen to some Hari-katha and to also speak some Hari-katha to you all today. It is our great fortune that we have been able to come here. This is Ekachakra Dham, the holy appearance place of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. This holy place is commonly known as Birchandrapur.

When my Param Gurudev, Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj, established Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math in Koladwip, many of his godbrothers and many devotees came to him expressing their desire to take Harinam or sannyas initiation from him. Param Guru Maharaj Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj came here, to the birthplace of Sriman Nityananda Prabhu, and prayed to Him for mercy, ‘Prabhu, please bestow Your mercy on me.’ At that time, Param Guru Maharaj received a divine message (akash-dhvani). Nityananda Prabhu told him, ‘You have got Nayana Manjari’s [Srila Prabhupad’s] mercy to preach Rupa-Raghunath’s teachings. You must first distribute this mercy. Do not be a miser – preach and bestow that mercy onto others. After that, you can come and ask Me for mercy.’

Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj went back to his temple in Koladwip and gave his godbrothers and other souls an opportunity to take sannyas or Harinam initiation from him. Before that, he did not take any disciples. A householder disciple of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupad, Sakhi Charan Ray Bhakti Vijay, would give ten rupees to Srila Sridhar Maharaj every month, and Srila Sridhar Maharaj ran the temple with that money. At the same time, he also saved something from that money (perhaps, five rupees a year) and would send it every year to the temple of Sriman Nityananda Prabhu here, in Ekachakra, on Sriman Nityananda Prabhu’s appearance day. I heard about this from Gurudev.

It was Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur’s desire to establish a temple in Sri Ekachakra Dham, but he only stayed in this world for sixty-four years, so he did not live to fulfil his desire. But by his mercy and by the mercy of our Param Gurudev and the desire of our Gurudev, we managed to acquire this land in 2008. I remember Gurudev was abroad in America in 2007. This land was purchased in January 2008. Nityananda Prabhu’s festival is held every year in January–February, so that year we quickly made a pandal and held our first festival here. Seeing everyone’s enthusiasm, Gurudev was very pleased. He saw the programme through a live broadcast. Although Gurudev could not come, he always thought about Ekachakra Dham in his mind and heart. He told me, ‘Before making a temple, you must arrange for devotees’ quarters.’ That is why this four-storey building was built first as servitors’ quarters. Gurudev gave the name to the building: Sri Sri Hadai Pandit Padmavati Smriti Kunja [‘a service grove in remembrance of Sri Hadai Pandit and Sri Padmavati Mayi’]. Devotees follow the line of this name to this day.
