(6/6) About Nityananda Prabhu
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
I see that they are already offering the bhoga. I will let you go just now. It is time to take prasad, and you were fasting yesterday, so you must be hungry. Sri Narahari Thakur writes very beautifully about the stay of Pancha Pandav (the five Pandavas) in Ekachakra. I will read it to you in the evening, and now I would like to read to you what Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami writes about Sri Nityananda Prabhu’s mercy. These are very beautiful words.
sri-chaitanya—sei krsna, nityananda—rama ‘Sri Chaitanya is Sri Krishna, and Nityananda is Balaram. Nityananda fulfils all desires of Sri Chaitanya.’ (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.5.156) Who fulfils the longing and hankering of Sri Chaitanya? Sri Nityananda. Mahaprabhu told Him, ‘Nityananda, distribute Krishna-prema to this world! Preach the Holy Name of Krishna!’ but Nityananda Prabhu thought, ‘The people of this world will not understand the Holy Name of Krishna so easily. I would rather preach the Holy Name of Gauranga!’
bhaja gauranga, kaha gauranga, laha gaurangera nama re ‘Worship Gauranga! Say Gauranga! Take Gauranga’s Name! Those who worship Gauranga are My heart and soul!’ (Sri Nityananda Prabhu) That is why we always chant, ‘Guru-Nityananda, Gaura-Nityananda! Nitai-Gauranga! Nitai-Gaura!’
nityananda-mahima-sindhu ananta, apara ‘The ocean of Lord Nityananda’s glories is infinite and unfathomable. Only by His mercy can I touch even a drop of it.’ (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.5.157) Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami says that Nityananda Prabhu’s glory is unlimited. Only if you get a slightest touch of His mercy can you understand it. Nityananda Prabhu freely scattered His mercy to all fallen souls. The Lord came to this world to deliver all fallen souls. [His Divine Grace reads from Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, Chapter 5.]
ara eka suna tanra krpara mahima ‘Please hear about more glory of His mercy. He made a fallen soul climb to the highest peak.’
veda-guhya katha ei ayogya kahite ‘To disclose it is not proper because it should be kept as confidential as the Vedas, but I shall still speak of it to make His mercy known to all.’
ullasa-upari lekhon tomara prasada ‘O Lord Nityananda, I write about Your mercy out of great exultation. Please forgive my offences.’ Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami says, ‘Prabhu, please forgive me if I become too audacious or mad writing about You.’
avadhuta gosanira eka bhrtya prema-dhama ‘Lord Nityananda Prabhu has a servant called Sri Minaketan Ramadas, who is a reservoir of divine love.’
amara alaye aho-ratra-sankirtana ‘There was sankirtan day and night at my house. He received an invitation and came there.’
maha-prema-maya tinho vasila angane ‘Absorbed in ecstatic love, he sat in my courtyard, and all the Vaishnavs bowed down at his feet.’
namaskara karite, ka’ra uparete chade ‘In a joyful mood of love for the Lord, he sometimes climbed upon the shoulder of someone who was offering him an obeisance and sometimes struck others with his flute or mildly slapped them.’
ye nayana dekhite asru haya mane yara ‘When someone saw Minaketan Ramadas’s eyes that shed a constant shower of tears, tears would automatically flow from their eyes.’
kabhu kona ange dekhi pulaka-kadamba ‘Sometimes, there were eruptions of ecstasy like kadamba flowers on some parts of his body, and sometimes one limb would be stunned while another one would be trembling.’
nityananda bali’ yabe karena hunkara ‘Whenever he shouted aloud Nityananda’s Name, the people around him were filled with great wonder and astonishment.’
gunarnava misra name eka vipra arya ‘A respectable brahman Sri Gunarnava Misra was serving the Deity at that time.’
angane asiya tenho na kaila sambhasa ‘When Minaketan Ramdas was seated in the yard, that brahman did not offer him any respect. Seeing this, Sri Ramadas became angry and spoke as follows.’
‘ei ta’ dvitiya suta romaharasana ‘Here I find the second Romaharsana-suta, who did not stand up to show honour when he saw Lord Balaram.’ He behaved like an atheist – Gunarnava Misra had no faith in Vaishnavs, considering himself very great.
eta bali’ nache gaya, karaye santosa ‘Saying this, Minaketan Ramdas danced and sang to his heart’s content; he did not become angry because he was serving Lord Krishna.’
utsavante gela tinho kariya prasada ‘At the end of the festival, Minaketan Ramadas went away, offering his blessings to everyone. At that time, he had some argument with my brother.’
chaitanya-prabhute tanra sudrdha visvasa ‘My brother had firm faith in Lord Chaitanya but only a dim glimmer of faith in Lord Nityananda.’ Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami Prabhu’s brother had faith in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu but no faith in Nityananda Prabhu. I told you yesterday that this is a half-hen logic.
iha jani’ ramadasera duhkha haila mane ‘Knowing this, Sri Ramadas felt unhappy. I then rebuked my brother.’
dui bhai eka-tanu—samana-prakasa ‘These two brothers are one body: They are identical manifestations. If you do not believe in Lord Nityananda, you will fall down.’ ‘You give honour to Mahaprabhu, but you have no respect for Nityananda! You will be ruined!’ In other words, this also means, ‘You are giving respect to the Lord, but you do not give respect to the guru.’
ekete visvasa, anye na kara sammana ‘If you have faith in One but disrespect the Other, you are following a half-hen logic.’
kimva, donha na manina hao ta’ pasanda ‘It is better to be an atheist slighting both Brothers than to be a hypocrite believing in One and slighting the Other.’ If you give honour to One and no honour to the Other, then you are a hypocrite.
kruddha haiya vamsi bhangi’ chale ramadasa ‘Sri Ramadas broke his flute in anger and went away. At that time, my brother fell down.’ Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami Prabhu’s brother fell down – all his life was ruined because he had made vaishnav-aparadha. Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami Prabhu did not even write his brother’s name in the book.
ei ta’ kahila tanra sevaka-prabhava ‘I have described the power of Lord Nityananda’s servants. Now I shall describe another characteristic of His mercy.’
bhaike bhartsinu muni, lana ei guna ‘Appreciating that I had chastised my brother (considering it my good quality), Lord Nityananda granted me His darshan that night.’
naihati-nikate ‘jhamatapura’ name grama ‘In the village of Jhamatapur, near Naihati, Lord Nityananda appeared to me in a dream.’
dandavat haiya ami padinu payete ‘I fell at His feet, offering my obeisances, and He then placed His lotus feet upon my head.’
‘utha’, ‘utha’ bali’ more bale bara bara ‘“Wake up! Wake up!” He told me again and again. Rising, I was greatly astonished to see His beauty.’ Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami is describing here the form of Sri Nityananda Prabhu that he saw:
syama-chikkana kanti, prakanda sarira ‘He had a glossy blackish complexion, and His tall, strong, heroic stature made Him look like Cupid himself.’ Nityananda Prabhu was very tall. Gurudev told the size of the Deities that were to be installed here at the temple, and he said that Gaura had to be 7’6 (228.6 cm) and Nitai 7’4 (223.5 cm) tall. That is Their actual height.
suvalita hasta, pada, kamala-nayana ‘He had beautifully formed hands, arms and legs. His eyes resembled lotus flowers. He wore silk clothes and a silk turban on His head.’
suvarna-kundala karne, svarnangada-vala ‘He had golden earrings, armlets and bangles. He wore tinkling anklets on His feet and a garland of flowers around His neck.’
chandana-lepita-anga, tilaka suthama ‘His body was anointed with sandalwood pulp, and He was nicely decorated with tilak marks. The majesty of His movements surpassed that of a maddened elephant.’
koti-chandra jini’ mukha ujjvala-varana ‘His face was more beautiful than millions of moons. His teeth were reddish like pomegranate seeds from chewing betel.’
preme matta anga dahine-vame dole ‘He was absorbed in ecstasy, so His body moved to and fro, right and left. He chanted “Krishna, Krishna” in a deep voice.’
ranga-yasti haste dole yena matta simha ‘Swinging a red stick in His hand, He looked like a maddened lion. There were bumblebees all around the four sides of His feet.’
parisada-gane dekhi’ saba gopa-vese ‘His devotees, dressed as cowherd boys, surrounded His feet like many bees and also chanted “Krishna, Krishna”, absorbed in ecstatic love.’
singa vamsi bajaya keha, keha nache gaya ‘Some of them played horns and flutes; some danced and sang. Some of them offered betel nuts; some waved chamara fans about Him.’
nityananda-svarupera dekhiya vaibhava ‘Such is the opulence that I saw in Lord Nityananda’s form. His wonderful form, qualities and pastimes are all supramundane.’
anande vihvala ami, kichhu nahi jani ‘I was overwhelmed with transcendental ecstasy and did not understand anything. Then, Lord Nityananda smiled and spoke to me as follows.’
are are krsnadasa, na karaha bhaya ‘O my dear Krishna Das, do not be afraid. Go to Vrindavan. You will attain everything there.’ ‘Wake up, wake up, Krishna Das! Do not stay here in Jhamatpur. Come to Vrindavan, and you will get all benefit.’ These days, do you know what servitors do when they go to Vrindavan? They enjoy themselves, earning and spending money from their own pockets. When you go to Vrindavan, you must spend money on feeding others, not on yourselves. How can you practise Krishna consciousness like this? When you go to Vrindavan, you must practise Krishna consciousness – you must not go there to practise Maya consciousness. If you practise Krishna consciousness without following your guru, this is practising Maya consciousness, and you will only become tangled in illusory bondage. People go to Vrindavan to worship Radha-Krishna, but they cannot get any result unless they worship Nityananda Prabhu. There are many people like this living in Vrindavan, especially at Govinda Kunda. Some have problems at the temple, so they leave everything and go to do bhajan in Vrindavan. But when they go there, they only think about their stomaches. They always think, ‘What will I eat?’ It is all illusion. Gurudev said that Vrindavan monkeys were previously all those babajis who come there to earn money. If you go to Vrindavan, you will see that now monkeys eat biscuits and drink Frooti mango juice! Why is it like this? Because those babajis worried about their own enjoyment. There are people called ‘chhadi-ghuray’ [bossy people who like to brandish their sticks, or, figuratively, lord it over and command others]. They come, chant kirtan for two hours and ask you for a kilogram of rice and a certain amount of money. What they chant is not Hare Krishna. They chant to earn money.
asadhu-sange bhai krsna-nama nahi haya ‘Brother, the Name of Krishna cannot be chanted in bad association: it may certainly sound like the letters of the Name, but it can never be the Name proper.’ (Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 7.1, Srila Jagadananda Pandit) So, continuing reading,
eta bali’ prerila more hatasani diya ‘After saying this, He pointed towards Vrindavan with His hand and disappeared along with His associates.’
murchchhita haiya muni padinu bhumite ‘I fainted and fell on the ground. My dream broke, and I saw that morning had come.’
ki dekhinu ki suninu, kariye vichara ‘I thought about what I had seen and heard and concluded that the Lord had ordered me to go to Vrindavan at once.’
sei ksane vrndavane karinu gamana ‘That very second I started for Vrindavan, and by His mercy, I reached it in great happiness.’
jaya jaya nityananda, nityananda-rama ‘Glory, glory to Nityananda, to Nityananda-Rama, by whose mercy I have received shelter in the transcendental abode of Vrindavan!’
jaya jaya nityananda, jaya krpa-maya ‘Glory, glory to merciful Lord Nityananda, through whom I have got shelter at the lotus feet of Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatan!’
yanha haite painu raghunatha-mahasaya ‘By His mercy, I have got the shelter of the great personality Sri Raghunath Das Goswami, and by His mercy, I have found the refuge of Sri Svarup Damodar.’
sanatana-krpaya painu bhaktira siddhanta ‘By the mercy of Sri Sanatan, I have learned the ultimate truths of devotional service, and by the grace of Sri Rupa, I have tasted the highest nectar of devotional service.’
jaya jaya nityananda-charanaravinda ‘Glory, glory to the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, by whose mercy I have got Sri Radha-Govinda!’
jagai madhai haite muni se papistha ‘I am more sinful than Jagai and Madhai and lower than worms in stool.’
mora nama sune yei tara punya ksaya ‘If anyone hears my name, they lose all auspiciousness. If anyone takes my name, they commit a sin.’ How low he thinks of himself!
emana nirghrna more keba krpa kare ‘Who in this world but Nityananda can show His mercy to such an abominable person as me?’
preme matta nityananda krpa-avatara ‘Intoxicated with ecstatic love, Nityananda is mercy incarnate. He does not distinguish between the good and the bad.’ Nityananda Prabhu does not judge who is good and who is bad! He takes everyone on His lap!
ye age padaye, tare karaye nistara ‘Because He delivers anyone who falls before Him, He has delivered such a sinful, fallen person as me.’
mo-papisthe anilena sri-vrndavana ‘Although I am sinful and the most fallen, He has given me Sri Rupa Goswami’s lotus feet.’
sri-madana-gopala-sri-govinda-darasana ‘I am not fit to speak about Sri Madan Gopal and Sri Govinda.’
vrndavana-purandara sri-madana-gopala ‘Sri Madan Gopal, the chief Deity of Vrindavan, is the enjoyer of the rasa dance, none other than the Son of the King of Vraja.’
sri-radha-lalita-sange rasa-vilasa ‘He enjoys the rasa dance with Sri Radha, Sri Lalita and others. He manifests Himself as the Cupid of Cupids.’
sva-madhurye lokera mana kare akarsana ‘With Radha and Lalita serving Him on His two sides, He attracts the hearts of all by His sweetness.’
nityananda-daya more tanre dekhaila ‘The mercy of Lord Nityananda showed me Sri Madan-Mohan and gave me Sri Madan-Mohan as my Lord and master.’
mo-adhame dila sri-govinda darasana ‘He granted to one as lowly as me the sight of Lord Govinda. Words cannot describe this, nor is it fit to be disclosed.’
vrndavane yoga-pithe kalpa-taru-vane ‘Lord Govinda sits on an altar made of gems in the principal temple of Vrindavan, amidst a forest of wish-fulfilling trees. He is the Son of the King of Vraja. He manifests His full glory and sweetness and enchants the entire world.’
vama-parsve sri-radhika sakhi-gana-sange ‘On His left side is Srimati Radharani and Her girlfriends. Lord Govinda enjoys the rasa-lila and many other pastimes in their company.’
yanra dhyana nija-loke kare padmasana ‘Seated on his lotus seat in his abode, Lord Brahma always meditates on Him and worships Him with the eighteen-syllable mantra.’
chaudda-bhuvane yanra sabe kare dhyana ‘Every living entity in the fourteen worlds meditates upon Him, and all denizens of Vaikuntha sing of His qualities and pastimes.’
yanra madhurite kare laksmi akarsana ‘Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, is attracted by His sweetness, which Srila Rupa Goswami has described in this way:’
smeram bhangi-traya-parichitam sachi-vistirna-drstim ‘“My dear friend, if you are attached to your worldly friends, do not look at the smiling face of Lord Govinda as He stands on the bank of the Yamuna at Keshi Ghat. Casting sidelong glances, He places His flute to His lips, which look like newly blossomed twigs. He playfully bends His neck, waist and knees, and His transcendental body appears very bright in the moonlight.”’
saksat vrajendra-suta ithe nahi ana ‘Without a doubt, He is the Son of the King of Vraja Himself. Only fools consider Him a statue. Because of this offence, they cannot be liberated and fall into a terrible hell. What more can I say?’ People think that Deities are dolls, so they think it is all right to gossip and chat in front of Them. What becomes of those who have such consciousness? They have no means of salvation – there is no way for them to redeem their offences. The Lord is Vrajendra-nandan Himself (the Son of the King of Vraja)! The Lord speaks, the Lord steals, the Lord gives witness, but we do not understand this. You all come to me asking me for mercy, but how can I give you mercy? The Lord is in your hearts, so He will give you His mercy. Do we have the power to give mercy to anyone?
hena ye govinda prabhu, painu yanha haite ‘Who can describe the mercy of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, through whom I have got the shelter of this Lord Govinda?’
vrndavane vaise yata vaisnava-mandala ‘All Vaishnavs who live in Vrindavan are absorbed in chanting the all-auspicious Name of Krishna.’
yanra prana-dhana – nityananda-sri-chaitanya ‘Lord Chaitanya and Lord Nityananda are the life and soul of Vaishnavs. They do not know anything except devotion to Sri Sri Radha-Krishna.’
se vaisnavera pada-renu, tara pada-chhaya ‘The dust and shade of the lotus feet of Vaishnavs have been granted to this fallen soul by Lord Nityananda’s mercy.’
‘tanha sarva labhya haya’ – prabhura vachana ‘“In Vrindavan, you will attain everything.” These are my Master’s words. I have explained His succinct statement in detail here.’
se saba painu ami vrndavane aya ‘I have got all this by coming to Vrindavan. It was possible only by Lord Nityananda’s mercy.’
apanara katha likhi nirlajja haiya ‘I have written my own story without any shame. The qualities of Lord Nityananda make me mad and force me to write these things.’
nityananda-prabhura guna-mahima apara ‘The glories of Lord Nityananda’s transcendental qualities are unfathomable. Even Lord Sesa cannot describe them fully with His thousands of mouths.’
sri-rupa-raghunatha-pade yara asa ‘Praying at the lotus feet of Sri Rupa and Sri Raghunath, always desiring their mercy, I, Krishna Das, narrate this Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, following in their footsteps.’ This is all written in the Adi-Lila of Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita.
