Sri Madhavendra Puripad:
One of a Kind

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Nabadwip Dham Parikrama, Mahadvadasi
Noon class, 25 March 2021, part 1
Translated from Bengali

Today is a very auspicious day for us—it is a holy day dedicated to the worship of a Vaishnav. It is also mahadvadasi today, we are observing ekadasi-tithi on this day, and today is the disappearance day of Srila Madhavendra Puripad. You know about it. Gurudev always told me to make date-juice (from date molasses; 'khejurer ras') and shukto (a bitter vegetable curry) on this day.

Today is the festival in honour of Srila Madhavendra Puri's disappearance. Yesterday we spoke about the glories of Bhakta-raj Prahlad Maharaj, how Lord Nrisinghadev defeated Hiranyakasipu and protected Prahlad Maharaj. Hiranyakasipu got the boon that he would not be killed by any creature of this world—there is a lion in this world, there is a human in this world, but there is no form that combines both. So, the Lord assumed this form of half-lion, half-man.

Anyhow, I will speak today about Srila Madhavendra Puri. He is the root of the divine wish-fulfilling tree of our line. Today is his disappearance festival. I will speak about it today.

মূকং করোতি বাচালং পঙ্গুং লঙ্ঘয়তে গিরিম্ ।
যৎকৃপা তমহং বন্দে শ্রীগুরুং দীনতারণম্ ॥

mukam karoti vachalam pangum langhayate girim
yat krpa tam aham vande sri-gurum dina-taranam

"The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill—all it takes is mercy from Gurudev."

(Bhavartha Dipika)

First of all, I am offering my full obeisance at the holy lotus feet of Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, begging him for his causeless mercy, after that I am offering my obeisance to all Guru-varga, to all my God-brothers and sisters, to all the listeners, to all the motherly lady devotees, to all devotees, and I am praying to you all for your mercy to this low soul.

We have got this opportunity today to hear about the disappearance of Sri Madhavendra Puri.

jaya sri madhavapuri krsna-prema-pura
bhakti-kalpatarura tenho prathama ankura

Glory to Madhav Puri, the abode of love of Krishna, from whom the divine tree of devotion initially sprouts.

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.9.10)

Bhagavan Sri Gaura Hari spoke about Sri Madhavendra Puri and we can read about it in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita

prabhu kahe,—nityananda, karaha vichara
puri-sama bhagyavan jagate nahi ara

"Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked Nityananda Prabhu to judge whether there was anyone within the world as fortunate as Madhavendra Puri."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.4.171)

There is no one in this world who is as fortunate as Madhavendra Puri.

dugdha-dana-chhale krsna yanre dekha dila
tina-bare svapne asi' yanre ajna kaila

"Madhavendra Puri was so fortunate that Krishna personally appeared before him on the plea of delivering milk. Three times the Lord gave orders to Madhavendra Puri in dreams."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.4.172)

The Lord came to Madhavendra Puri three times when he was asleep and gave him service.

yanra preme vasa hana prakaaa haila
seva angikara kari' jagata tarila

"Being obliged because of the loving affairs of Madhavendra Puri, Lord Krishna Himself appeared as the Gopal Deity, and, accepting his service, He liberated the whole world."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.4.173)

Govardhan-dhari Gopal became manifest in this world through the hand of Madhavendra Puri.

yanra lagi' gopinatha ksira kaila churi
ataeva nama haila 'ksira-chora' kari'

"On account of Madhavendra Puri, Lord Gopinath stole the pot of sweet rice. Thus He became famous as Ksir-chora ('the thief who stole the sweet rice')

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.4.174)

Setting on the Right Track (Part 2)
'I am praying to you all that you do not forget your service to your Guru, to the Vaishnavs, Bhagavan. I am bowing at your lotus feet: if you serve my Guru, I will serve you my whole life; if you serve my Guru, I will sacrifice my life to serve you.'

Durlabha manava-janma
'My body will be laid to rest at the crematorium. There birds and insects will enjoy it. This is the fate of my body, its effects, material wealth, and all of my companions.'
দুর্লভ মানব জন্ম

Krishna takes care of us. We think our father and mother protect us, but they cannot do anything. They can only help us survive, give us some nourishment, but not protect.
