mukam karoti vachalam pangum langhayate girim "The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill—all it takes is mercy from Gurudev." (Bhavartha Dipika) First of all, I am offering my full obeisance at the holy lotus feet of Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, begging him for his causeless mercy, after that I am offering my obeisance to all Guru-varga, to all my God-brothers and sisters, to all the listeners, to all the motherly lady devotees, to all devotees, and I am praying to you all for your mercy to this low soul. Is everyone OK? Devotees: Yes! I had prayed to the Lord so that you would be able to complete this parikrama nicely. By the Lord's mercy there were no obstacles, no rain, no problems. The parikrama went very well and smoothly. Everybody did the parikrama very well without any incidents. [A devotees says that somebody had strayed and went to another party today during the parikrama, etc.] Those are vantasi (vomit-eaters)—they always go to different places. What did Gurudev tell? Who must you associate with? You must associate with those who are more senior than you are, you must observe and learn from those who have brought you to this line. Do you think you can become a sadhu just by dressing as one? You can buy these clothes on the street. If I buy the clothes of a policeman and hang a gun on my belt, will that make me a policeman? If I dress as a judge, does that make me a judge? I do not like all those aul, baul, kartabhaja, neda, darvesh, sani, sahajiya, sakhibekhi, smarta, jata gosai, ativadi, churadhari, gauranga-nagari. Srila Sridhar Maharaj said, "You cannot attach one tree's bark to another tree." Where have you brought all this idea from? I know where they went, do you think I do not know? I can tell you where they went. They were with us until Champahatti, after that there was another party, and they got mixed among them. "Asat-sanga sada tyaga chhada anya gita-raga (অসৎ-সঙ্গ সদা ত্যাগ, ছাড় অন্য গীতরাগ)—give up bad association, do not listen to the material songs and music." (Sri Prema-bhakti-chandrika, 15) Once, a greatest devotee of Srila Sanatan Goswami tied a red-colour turban on his head and came to Srila Jagadananda Pandit. When Srila Jagadananda Pandit came to Vrindavan, he was staying at the same place as Srila Rupa Goswami and Srila Sanatan Goswami. So, when Srila Jagadananda Pandit saw the red-colour turban on the head of Srila Sanatan Goswami, it stirred his heart as he remembered Mahaprabhu. He asked Sanatan Goswami, "Prabhu, when did Mahaprabhu give you this cloth?" Sanatan Goswami replied, "No, He did not give it to me. I got it from another sadhu named Mukunda Saraswati." At that time, Srila Jagadananda Pandit was cooking some rice and as soon as he heard those words, and, although he was junior and Srila Sanatan Goswami was much older, Srila Jagadananda Pandit dashed at Srila Sanatan Goswami, about to hit him with the pot of boiling rice! He said, "You love the Lord so much, and the Lord loved you so much—how could you take somebody else's cloth and tie it on your head?!" [In reply, Srila Sanatan Goswami explained, "Now I see how much you love Mahaprabhu! I wore this turban only to test you and to see your love for the Lord."] Saffron is taken only from one's Guru. You can see this boy here wearing saffron, he took it from me, and I also received saffron from my Guru. You cannot just go to the market and buy it. Never do this. ...I saw that person entering the room, and I prohibited him to go there. He is my own, then I can say that. I can only prohibit something to those whom I take as my very heart and soul. What did the Lord say in Srimad Bhagavad-gita? "I do not know anyone except for My devotees, and My devotees also do not know anyone except Me." One must become a devotee. When you take initiation, you take it to serve your Guru, not to disturb your Guru. Always remember this.
