'What Is My Service?'

Devotee: I have got a question. What is my service?

You are still studying now. Come every day to the class, chant kirtans, practise properly, take part in the preaching programmes. This is your service now because you are studying now and I cannot tell you that you must leave your studies and join Krishna consciousness full time or come to India. For now you must study. Later, when you get a job and earn money, you can serve your Guru, Vaishnavs, and Bhagavan with that money. For now you do not have your own money—you are studying and you have to take money from your parents—so I cannot tell you that you should give donation for the temple, for this, for that. I cannot tell you that because you are a student now, so for now practise properly, keep good association. These are the main things in your life. Practise nava-vidha bhakti (nine devotional practices: sravanam, kirtanam, smaranam, pada-sevanam, archanam, vandanam, dasyam, sakhyam, atma-nivedanam—hearing, chanting, remembering the Lord, serving the Lord's lotus feet, worshipping the Deity of the Lord, offering obeisance, rendering service as a servitor, as a friend, and self-submission. That is the service you should do.

Devotee: Can I ask what my name means?

Oh, it is a very nice name! Gurudev gave you this name Vijayanti (Vaijayanti). 'Vaijayanti' means one who always overcomes any trouble, and you are the proof of that. I saw what kind of disease (a tumour) you had in your brain, despite so much trouble you are alive in this world and talking in front of me. That is a miracle. So, you will always succeed everywhere in your life, I can tell you that. I am not an astrologer like your father, but I can tell you that you will succeed in your spiritual life—there will be no problem, no bondage. You will be always victorious ('vaijayanti': always 'jay', you will be always accompanied by victory). You will always succeed, you will always be able to defeat Maya.

Devotee: I would like to ask you for a blessing...

You are already always doing service. You work and send every month some amount of money, some contribution, to me every month, that is your important service. Try to continue this service, try to always help. You know that whenever devotees send some money, I always buy bricks, cement, rod, iron and pay for labour with that money. Even though I have left Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math (main temple), devotees have not left me, they always with me. When they come at Gaura Purnima time or at any other time or festival, they suffer so much having to stay at some hotel, some rented house, but this year devotees were happy because they could get their own room at Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math. There are a hundred rooms ready in the new building named Sri Bhakti Sundar Angan. So, next year, if the situation is good and the pandemic finishes, devotees will start coming again and they will be able to stay happily with me in the same building without any problems.

If I go back to the main Math of Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, that is OK, and if do not go back, that is also not a problem for me because there is too much trouble there and I do not want to fight with them. I am fine with it. Krishna has made other arrangement and I can stay at Sri Nrisingha Palli, I can stay in Dum Dum Park, and I am better here, my health is also good.

So, you already always do your service. You come from a devotees' family—both your mother and father are good devotees, they are helping the Mission very nicely. I pray to the Lord that your father may again be able to come to India, that is my happiness. He is always very sick because of his old age (he is more than seventy years old) and because he cannot tolerate the cold weather (cold weather is very bad for him), so I pray he remains in good health and I also pray to the Lord that you may remain in good health and that everything goes well at your work, then you will be able to continue your service. That is your seva.
